September 2019

When our ancestors received the Torah at Sinai, they responded in unison: Na’aseh v’Nishma: All this we will do and we will hear. According to Midrash, this show of our faith merits the salvation of the entire world. Today, as a Brit Olam congregation, Judea and the Reform Jewish Movement fulfill our covenant by confronting injustice at its root. We act through our communities and congregations, with partners from across lines of difference, to bring about a world in which all people experience wholeness, justice, and compassion.

March for a Hate-Free Hillsborough

Saturday, Aug 31, noon - 2pm
Old Slave Cemetery, W Margaret Ln and Occoneechee St, Hillsborough

You likely know that the Ku Klux Klan held a rally in Hillsborough on Saturday, August 24th. They've since reported they plan to return this weekend. Local community groups "Hate-Free Schools Coalition" and "Hillsborough Progressives Taking Action" believe that this is a direct response to their press conference and rally held on August 10th and an escalation in tactics by the confederate flaggers who have been terrorizing downtown Hillsborough. Carolina Jews for Justice and other community group are co-sponsoring the March for a Hate-Free Hillsborough and encourage Judea members to stand with them in opposition to hate, violence and intimidation.
From the Organizers:

We, as a community, must stand together in bold opposition to this hate, violence, and intimidation and let the Klan and the people who come every weekend to the street corners of Downtown Hillsborough waving the same flag, that they are not welcome here.

We ask you to join us as we take the streets of downtown Hillsborough. We will meet at the Old Slave Cemetery and march to the courthouse.

We have reached out to organizations and anti-racist leaders in the community to link arms with us in this fight against white supremacy. See the list of speakers and co-sponsors here.
Your contributions to our Tzedakah Box in July, August, and through mid-September are designated for Durham CAN. Durham CAN (Congregations, Associations, and Neighborhoods) is a broad-based, non-profit organization that works to coalesce, train, and organize communities in Durham across religious, racial, ethnic, class, and geographic lines for the public good.
Dignified Affordable Housing - is a core element of our social justice work. We welcome congregants joining this work - whether organizing power with Durham CAN (contact lay leader Sonia Laurie), learning about the affordable housing bond on Durham's November ballot, or building with our Habitat crew!

Join Judea in Support of Families Moving Forward

Families Moving Forward helps provide families with children a stable, safe and loving environment while they are in the temporary crisis of homelessness. FMF now offers after school tutoring, educational enrichment programming, and early interventions to children residing in our shelter as part of a two-generation approach that aims to break the cycle of poverty in our community.

Four weeks each year, Judea partners with two other congregations to provide dinners and childcare so that parents can attend educational sessions. Please join us in this mitzvah. Our next scheduled evening is Oct 30. We need volunteers to make this happen - provide dinner, serve the meal, offer childcare. See http://bit.ly/JRC-FMF or contact lay leader Tina Prinstein for more info on how you can join us in this rewarding mitzvah.
Many, many thanks to Judea members who contributed 36 backpacks filled with school supplies, many graphing calculators and $700 in gift cards for recently arrived refugee kids. Thanks to you, these children have all the needed supplies to start the school year on the right foot!  Todah Rabah to Celie Kaplan for organizing our fourth annual back-to-school backpack drive.

Judea is very active in supporting newly arrived refugees and justice for our immigrant neighbors. If you'd like to take part in the mitzvah of welcoming the stranger - for you were once a stranger in the land of Egypt - (whether through advocacy, direct service or Tzedakah) - please subscribe to our Refugee Resttlement & Immigrant Justice Newsletter or contact Social Action Chair Marian Abernathy for more info.
