Podcast Gumbo

Three Recommended Podcast Episodes Every Humpday

I'm still recovering from Podcast Movement and now my friend is already hounding me to go to the Third Coast International Audio Festival in two months. Get off my back!

There's also the Sound Education and Podtales events this fall which I'll be going to especially since they are both in Boston. (More on these to come.) And I also got the word about Podcast Maker Weekend in London in a few weeks which sounds quite compelling although I won't be able to make that one.

It's non-stop but all good. If any of you are going to any of these events, please let me know and we'll make it a point to talk about, I don't know, podcasts?

Thanks For Tanks!

The Skimmer’s Hook: Do you have kids? Are they interested in business? Have them learn from other kids.

Listen if you like: Shark Tank, Ambitious High Schoolers

If you have a high schooler that is looking for some career direction, my name is probably not the first on your list of people to talk to. (Or is it?!?)

So where should you/they turn to? How about the Kids in the Tank podcast where high schoolers host a podcast that helps kids get some insight into various business topics. In this episode, they interview Abe Minkara, who oversees the portfolio of Shark Tank and other companies at Mark Cuban Companies.

Once they get their questions in, the tables are turned and they have to answer Minkara’s questions, including the benefits of LinkedIn.

Not Outside

The Skimmer’s Hook: Listen to the mind behind one of the more creative podcasts out there (or in there).

Listen if you like: Podcasts, Creativity

Inside Baseball or Inside Podcasting? Actually, both.

Do you know the metaphor, ‘inside baseball?’ If you don’t, secretly read this wiki entry quickly.

In past newsletters, I have mentioned Everything is Alive, which is one of the more unique podcasts out there. The host interviews inanimate objects like a can of cola and a baseball cap. Why can’t I be so creative?

In this new episode from Inside Podcasting (they aren’t just a newsletter anymore!), we hear from the mind behind Everything is Alive, Ian Chillag. Out of all the hosts out there in the podosphere, this is the interview I have wanted to hear. I needed the inside baseball about this show.

If you don’t know the show, I suggest listening to either of the episode links above and then listen to this interview. And then marvel at how unoriginal and uncreative you are in comparison....

Care + Giving = Caregiving

The Skimmer’s Hook: How can you be a better caregiver for your parents?

Listen if you like: Elderly Loved Ones

My dad is old. I’m going to bet that if you knew him, 95% of you would say he is the oldest person you know. No, he wasn't on the Mayflower but he was on the MS Gripsholm.

Our family is incredibly lucky to continue to have him around. This year, he has slowed down and we all have had to learn things we hadn’t previously worried about like lift chairs and Nepro drink flavors.

Honestly, it can be overwhelming at times. You have to get into a completely different mindset. Oddly, I wasn’t even looking for something like this (even though I should’ve been) but this show and episode came across my ears. So if your parents are getting up there in age, you’ll want to listen to this.

Extra Hot Sauce

Last week, I mentioned a piece done for the KCRW Radio Race by an AIR member. That member emailed me and wanted to make sure that she wasn’t given all the credit. She asked me to let people know that she didn't produce the piece on her own and that she co-produced it with three other producers. Also, for the record, that submission is one of the 11 finalists.

Here is where I profess my love for Linda Ronstadt, who I consider having one of the greatest singing voices ever. Please don't ask me how many times I have watched one of her performances on youtube only to tumble down that rabbit hole for 90 more minutes. I have not finished this piece since it’s 2 hours long but I’m eager to get there.
