The Book as Art Object: Local Artists Share Their Work

Books are familiar tools for providing readers with emotional comfort, intellectual content, and soaring inspiration, but are and can be so much more–as objects, they also represent the capacity of art and form to further connect with readers and non-readers alike. Join Special Collections & Archives as we share intriguing examples of the book arts contributed by local artists and Wake Forest students.


Bookmarks Author: Margaret George

Location: ZSR Library - Special Collections & Archives Research Room (625)

A Conversation with Margaret George, author of Mary Queen of Scotland and the Isles. Why do we still find Mary Queen of Scots and Elizabeth I of England so fascinating? How much truth is there in historical fiction? How does researching a biographical novel compare to other kinds of historical research? Join us for a conversation with Dr. Stephanie Koscak of the WFU English Department, and New York Times bestselling author, Margaret George, who will discuss her work on Mary Queen of Scots and the Tudors. This is an author presentation in conjunction with the Bookmarks Festival of Books and Authors.


Bookmarks Author: Rajia Hassib

Location: ZSR Library - Special Collections & Archives Research Room (625)

In partnership with the Bookmarks Festival of Books and Authors, ZSR Library Special Collections & Archives will host festival author Rajia Hassib in the Special Collections & Archives Research Room (ZSR625) starting at 4:00 pm. Her new novel, A Pure Heart, is a portrait of two Muslim women in the twenty-first century, and the decisions they make in work and love that determine their destinies. Rajia Hassib was born and raised in Alexandria, Egypt, before moving to the US at age twenty-three. She holds an MA in Creative Writing from Marshall University, and she has written for The New York Times Book Review and The New Yorker online.

ZSR Open

Location: ZSR Library - Special Collections & Archives Research Room (625)

Wake students are invited to join us for the ZSR Open, a six-hole mini-golf event with snacks and prizes for those who complete the course!


Winston-Salem Memories II Scanning Session

Location: ZSR Library - Special Collections & Archives Classroom (624)

In partnership with Piedmont Publishing and in preparation for the second volume of Winston-Salem Memories, Special Collections & Archives will host a community public scanning session. Brooke Horn, Piedmont Publishing Acquisition Editor, will digitize items brought to her by students, faculty, and staff. Items will be considered for possible inclusion in the book, and all will be appropriately credited.


Artist Demo and Exhibit Reception: The Book as Art Object: Local Artists Share Their Work

Join us from 4-5pm for an artists demonstarion and 5-6pm for a recption for our exhibit The Book as Art Object: Local artists Share Their Work. Artists: Robin Harper, Sara Hiatt, Anne Murray, Terry Schupbach-Gordon, Joyce Teta, History of the Book Lib260 Students.


Homecoming Open House

Location: ZSR Library - Special Collections & Archives Research Room (625)

We welcome alumni, family, and friends to visit our collections and see where Wake Forest's history "lives." Visitors will also be able to view a special exhibit: "The Book as Art Object: Local Artists Share Their Work," in addition to popup exhibits for the Class of 1959 and Wake Forest soldiers/veterans. Cookies and punch will be served.

Maya Angelou Exhibit Opening and Archives Month Reception

October is Archives Month! Join us in Special Collections & Archives to kick-off Archives Month, and celebrate the opening of our exhibit “50 Years of Caged Bird: An Exhibit from Dr. Maya Angelou’s Film & Theater Collection.” Light refreshments will be served.

In celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Dr. Maya Angelou’s autobiography I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings Special Collections & Archives will host an exhibit featuring materials from Maya Angelou’s Film and Theater Collection held at Wake Forest University.

HOP INTO HISTORY! Join us from 5-6:30pm at Hoots Beer Company for Hop into History! Chat with archivists from WFU, WSSU, FCPL, Reynolda, and UNCSA and learn more about what types of materials we have in our archives. HISTORY IS FOR EVERYONE!! The exhibit will be kid friendly, and we will have coloring pages for kids (of all ages). We hope that you’ll join us for this great opportunity to learn more about local history and archives while enjoying your favorite beer!

Deacon Brews: A ZSR Library Event for Wake Forest at Wise Man Brewing

Location: Wise Man Brewing

Wake’s Z. Smith Reynolds (ZSR) Library will host a special outreach event at Wise Man Brewing from 5 - 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 10. Wise Man will be introducing a specially-named beer, High Clouds with Haze (a hazy IPA), after Z. Smith Reynolds and his aviation experiences. A food truck, Goodtimes Bar-B-Cue, will be available and there are several restaurants close by. There will also be a Special Collections & Archives popup exhibit on Wake in Winston, focusing on the Wake Forest influence and impact on the city of Winston-Salem.

The 18th-Century Commonplace Book: Index, Table, Self

Location: ZSR Library - Special Collections & Archives Research Room (625)

Sponsored by Z. Smith Reynolds Library and the Wake Forest Humanities Institute, visiting scholar Julie Park will talk about her research on eighteenth century commonplace books, with a reception following the lecture. Dr. Park is a scholar of English literature and culture of the long eighteenth century. Her research examines the unexpected ways in which human subjects are inseparable from the material things, environments and devices of everyday life in historical contexts. Her areas of specialty include material and visual culture, history of subjectivity, the history and theory of the novel, genre and gender studies and archival studies.
