CSC is thrilled to host Corey Keyes for his talk Flourishing: Is There More to Life Than Happiness. Keyes, known for his work with positive psychology, will summarize the conception of mental health—from languishing to flourishing. He will discuss findings supporting the two continua model of mental health and illness as well as the flourishing that can occur when public health and universities shift to include mental health promotion and protection. Keyes is a founding member of the Society for the Study of Human Development.

Course: Thriving in Graduate School — Contemplative Inquiry, Pedagogy, and Practice
Location: Newcomb Hall, Commonwealth Room
Eligibility: UVA graduate and post-doctoral students

Navigating the various roles and responsibilities of a graduate program can be disorienting and stressful. This interactive 90-minute workshop will explore how contemplative approaches to research, teaching, and daily life can enhance well-being. The class will draw from the art and science of human flourishing, and focus on theories and techniques for thriving in graduate school and postdoc training. Faculty please share this opportunity with your graduate and post doctoral students. This class is part of PHD Plus—UVA's University-wide initiative to prepare graduate students across all disciplines for long-term career success

CSC offers 10 free contemplative classes every week—no need to register, just drop in! Choose from yoga for stress relief, T'ai Chi, mindfulness meditation, and much more. Classes are open to everyone: students, faculty, staff, and community members. Sessions are held on the 2nd floor of Clemons Library in Room 220. You may also reserve time in the room for contemplative practices at other times during the week. Reward: If you complete 20 classes you'll receive a Juice Laundry gift card!

In this session students will reflect on core values, skills, and interests to evaluate which careers are likely to bear meaning and personal fulfillment over time. The class will examine the beliefs, traditions, and experiences that have shaped students' career decisions. Through reflective writing students will explore values and learn contemplative techniques to build agency and resilience with more intention and greater clarity. Online self-assessment tools will also be explored. The 2019 Pickard Contemplative Fellowship application process is now open to all 3rd and 4th year McIntire Students.* This fully immersive weekend retreat will focus on developing skills to foster resilience as a student and a leader.  Emphasis will be on mental discipline, enhancing stress resilience, optimizing performance, and enabling balance. Fellows will attend an all-expenses paid retreat Oct 18-20.
 *Graduate students are welcome to apply but will be waitlisted until registration is complete.

call for proposals 

CSC is thrilled to partner with the University of Virginia Press to publish a new academic book series focusing on leading research, learning, and engagement related to contemplation across all scholarly and professional disciplines. We are soliciting scholarly book proposals addressing any of these themes: (1) Culture and Wisdom, (2)  Health and Well-being, (3) Education and Learning, (4) Design and Place, (5) Professions and Performance.

ashtanga yoga
at your own pace

Explore Mysore Ashtanga yoga and receive individualized instruction in the Ashtanga yoga sequence within a group setting. Participants slowly memorize the sequence while linking the postures with the breath so that it becomes a moving meditation. Everyone receives instruction based on level and ability but generally work within the traditional Ashtanga yoga sequence. Mysore is open to everyone and suitable for all body types and levels of experience.
