Rally Sunday! Sunday School Registration!
Sunday, September 8
It’s almost back to Sunday School time and we have an exciting year ahead of us! If you have a child age 4 up through 4th grade, join us on September 8 between services (9:10ish) to register for Sunday School and have some fun.
If you like kids and love Jesus, we could use your help! It is our goal to have at least two leaders for each Sunday School class (there are three total). Requirements are a willingness to do some reading in advance, that you like children, and that you love Jesus. We would ask for a commitment of between 4-6 weeks in a row (depending on the time of year). Talk to Shelby Miller or Pastor Brian if you feel called to this particular ministry and they can give you more details. Confirmation and High School students! We could use your help as co-teachers and helpers!

Lutheran World Relief School Bags
Summer is here, but before we know it, it will be time to start thinking about shopping for school supplies. This fall, the Sunday School Kids will be participating in collecting school supplies to assemble LWR School Kits. And since back to school sales are coming soon, please think about picking up extra supplies for the kits.
Why school supplies? Because, to the children who receive School Kits, these supplies mean the difference between getting an education or not. Public school is usually free, but in the places where LWR works, even a few required supplies, like notebooks, pencils and scissors, make a world of difference for families that struggle to afford their children’s education.
Items needed are:
4 70 page spiral notebooks (wide or college ruled)
1 12 inch ruler with centimeters on one side
1 METAL pencil sharpener-(plastic do not last)
1 blunt school scissors
5 unsharpened #2 pencils
5 black or blue ink pens (no gel)
1 box 15 or 24 crayons
1 2 ½ inch eraser
Also needed is: Clothes line rope to be used as the drawstrings for the back packs.
Items must be returned by Rally Sunday, September 8.
All of these supplies will be placed in a drawstring back pack. The back pack must meet certain criteria and can be made following the pattern supplied by LWR or will be purchased.
Are you interested in making the school bags?
The pattern is now available at the welcome center. PRE-CUT material for the bags is available at the welcome center as well. All you have to do is sew it together!! Please contact Joyce Graves (563-495-0269) for more information.

Where the Crawdads Sing
by Delia Owens
For years, rumors of the “Marsh Girl” have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark, the so-called Marsh Girl. But Kya is not what they say.

Food for Ely Fall Fest - Volunteers Needed!
Saturday, September 28
9:00 am – 4:30 pm
The Ely Fall Fest is a wonderful time for the community to gather for food, fellowship, and fun. It’s a two day event that drew the interest of almost 4,000 people last year. As part of our Mission Statement, St. John has a focus on being a presence in the community. After conversation and some encouragement from the City, St. John has decided to be part of this event by providing food during the day on Saturday, September 28.
While the menu will be relatively easy and straightforward; Loose Meat Sandwiches, Walking Tacos, Hot Dogs, drinks, chips, etc. we will need a lot of hands to help us prepare and serve the food. Slots will be available during three shifts between 9:00 am and 4:30 pm on that day. Those volunteer sheets will be out no later than Sunday, September 1. Please consider taking some time from your own enjoyment of the day to come give us a hand! You can pull a shift and then go enjoy the festivities yourself. You could also just come and spend the day interacting with all the people of Ely and doing what Christians do best, feed people! Either way, many hands makes for light work. Thank you for your support of St. John and the Ely Fall Fest.
