On September 21, 2019, people worldwide will be coming together in observance of World Clean-Up Day, celebrating a global effort to keep our environment clean and trash-free. Storm Water Hawaii’s Adopt-A-Highway program encourages local community members to do their part in keeping our state highways trash-free.

From Rubbish to Recreation: Sustainable Surfboards Made from “Ghost Nets”

Although plastic is an affordable, useful material that can be found in a majority of items we use today, it is also one of the main pollutants found in our oceans and causes great harm to ocean ecosystems around the world. Also known as “ghost nets”, the nylon plastic netting used by fishermen entangles sea creatures and degrades into microplastics that are then consumed by fish and other marine life.

In India, these old and harmful fishing nets are being recycled and repurposed to create surf boards by retrieving old fishing nets from the ocean. The nets are broken down into small pieces and are then used to create a recycled, more sustainable product.

Monitoring Day

In observance of  World Water Monitoring Day on September 18th, test to see how your tap water and bottled water fair by monitoring its drinkability with this fun and easy experiment that can be conducted right at home. Students Build A Microplastic Machine

Two students from Hahaione Elementary school built a machine that extracts microplastics from beach sand. They were inspired to make a difference and build their machine by a Kailua resident who also made a homemade microplastic machine. Now, their machine will be used by other schools and clubs to clean our beaches.
