Staff Book Review

The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison

The Bluest Eye was the late Toni Morrison’s first novel. It tells the tragic story of Pecola Breedlove. Pecola is poor and black, disregarded by society and reminded by her mother that she does not fit the standard of what America considers beautiful at the time. She comes to believe that if she could change her eye color, she will be loved and praised, and that her life will be different. The novel gives us context and insight on her parents past-and also includes the narrative of two of Pecola’s schoolmates who watch sadly as Pecola’s life takes a cumulative turn for the worst.

Available in print and e-book formats.

Guinea Pig Volunteers

You could be a volunteer! We are currently looking for volunteers to help us care for our library pets: Ivy and Bean! You could help us feed, water and socialize our furry friends. Ivy and Bean love visitors, so come on down and fill out one of our volunteer pamphlets-bring your parents or a sibling as your assistant! Library staff will help train you and show you the ropes. You can also contact staff guinea pig wrangler at mflaws@egflibrary.org. We look forward to seeing you!

Summer Reading Program Wrap-up

We had a fantastic Summer Reading Program this year!  We learned about wildlife of Minnesota and beyond, tested out algorithms with paper airplanes, learned about our friends from other countries, performed some magic, and even did a little dancing.  A total of 559 kids attended our weekly programs, and we set a new record for hours read in a summer - 1056!

We couldn't have done it without support from parents and patrons, along with generous donations from community businesses and organizations.  We'd like to extend a special thank you to the Friends of the Campbell Library for funding our programs and the Optimists Club who donated the funds for us to purchase a brand new book for every summer reading program participant.  Until next year, keep reading!
