Meet New Faces and Learn At Our Upcoming Events! 

The Asian Studies Center is excited to continue celebrating the start of the academic year with an array of events all held on campus. Thank you to those who attended last week's Welcome Reception. This week, we have the pleasure of starting our Asia Pop series which will focus on popular music this year with a lecture by Dr. Suk-Young Kim from UCLA on Thursday, September 5 at 5:30 in 125 Frick Fine Arts Auditorium called "What is K-Pop?" After this lecture, we will have additional lectures on J-Pop, Mando-Pop, and K-Pop throughout the semester!
BUILDING ASIA: THE ENVIRONMENTAL HISTORY OF THE IRON AND STEEL INDUSTRY IN POSTWAR EAST ASIA
Professor Maohong Bao from Peking University will examine the steel industry's global environmental history from four aspects: the development of the iron and steel industry in postwar East Asia; East Asia's iron ore and coal import and the environmental impact of resource extraction in production areas; the environmental consequences of iron processing in East Asia; and East Asia's steel exports and their recycling.The lecture will be held at 12 noon on Wednesday September 4 in 4130 Posvar.
CELEBRATING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PITTSBURGH & JAPAN THROUGH GARDEN DESIGN
Trained and educated in the United States and Japan, Professor Shunsaku Miyagi from the University of Tokyo  works on his projects with the philosophy "Life is Design Itself" in mind. Renowned in Japan for his work in landscape architecure, Miyagi is the representative director of the Byodoin Temple, which is located in Kyoto and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Professor Miyagi will deliver a lecture on the significance of Japanese gardens and the relevance of Japanese architecture and landscape design in Pittsburgh. The lecture will be held at 4:30 PM on Monday, September 9 in the Cathedral Humanities Center, Room 602.

JAPANESE LANGUAGE SOCIAL HOUR
Are you interested in Japanese language or culture? We are happy to welcome Pitt students and international students to participate in one of the semester's first  Language Social Hours to practice an Asian language and meet new peers! The Asian Studies Center and English Language Institute will host a Japanese Language Social Hour on Thursday, September 12 from 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM on the first floor of Posvar Hall at the Pitt Global Hub. GETTYSBURG: AN AMERICAN STORY DISTILLED THROUGH JAPANESE NOH
Gettysburg: An American Story Distilled through Japanese Noh  tells the story of the alliance between Confederate Lewis Armistead and Union General Winfield Hancock through the style of a noh drama, a popular Japanese stage art that includes instrumental music, chant, and dance. The performance will be on Saturday, September 14 at 7:30 PM in the Charity Randall Theatre. For more information, please click here.
