NEWS
ZILKHA CENTER ACADEMIC YEAR INTERNSHIPS OPEN
If you are looking to get more involved in sustainability initiatives on campus - apply now for an internship with us!  Opportunities include:  Eco-Advisors, Environmental Center Tour Guides, Environmental Center Landscape intern, Sustainable Food interns, Zero Waste interns, Green Offices interns, Community Carbon Reduction Projects Intern.  All the information is here and applications are due by Thursday, September 12, 2019 at 11:59 p.m.
SUMMER INTERNSHIP SUCCESSES
This summer we had 8 interns digging into solutions and telling stories related to on-campus sustainability!  Communications intern Wintana shared about each of the interns in a mid-summer "Internview" with each of them!  Read more here to get to know our summer interns and if you see them around campus, ask them about transportation, sustainable and just food systems, gardening, sustainability in strategic planning, our utility-scale solar purchase, the Green Office program, place based art-making, and how to be sustainable in your day to day life.  We want to share our gratitude for all their hard work!

STRATEGIC PLANNING: SEEKING INPUT
Keep an eye out for opportunities to contribute your ideas and perspectives to the strategic planning process.  In September and October, there will be chances to add your voice as each of the eight working groups gather information about what the campus cares about.  More information can be found here about the process, the working groups in general, and the sustainability working group.
NEW TRANSPORTATION GUIDE
This summer Sam Gilman '21 developed a guide to sustainable options for transportation.  He first focused on common destinations from Williamstown to determine the best way to get there when accounting for the carbon emissions related to the travel, in addition to the cost and time it takes to get there.  As you are planning your travel this fall, both in the close vicinity to campus and when making travel plans to go further afield, consult the Sustainable Transportation Guide on the sustainability website.
ROOT 2019
Root is in full swing!  Root is a collaboration between the Davis Center and Zilkha Center and focuses on the intersections of identity, sustainability, and environmental justice as we welcome the class of 2023!  Root students are filling the days with an overnight in central Massachusetts to connect with the land, making zines in the library, learning about activist histories on campus, picking and pressing apples from the orchard near the Envi Center into cider, visiting Soul Fire Farm, exploring North Adams, and so much more!  Keep up with Root via the student run instagram @findyourrootz
AUDIO TOUR OF THE ENVI CENTER
As you arrive back on campus, check out the numbers around the Envi Center building... what do they mean?  While we will continue to host in-person interactive tours of the Class of 66 Environmental Center, there is now the option to listen to a self-guided audio tour about the building.  The full tour is available at the link posted at each number around the building! To schedule a tour with a real life tour guide, email us at zilkhacenter@williams.edu!
ELIMINATING WATER BOTTLES AND ADDING COMPOST BINS AT CAMPUS EVENTS
As a step toward reducing waste, the college has decided to eliminate single-use plastic water bottles from all catered campus events. Starting this fall, Dining Services and the Catering office will provide drinking water at these events through the use of 3- and 5-gallon reusable jugs. In addition, containers will be designated for compostable waste. To have water jugs and compost receptacles at your event, email Jeannette at 413-597-3969 or jkopczyn@williams.edu.  Read more about the policy here!
DORM COMPOSTING
If you are looking to divert more of your waste on campus - consider starting up composting in your dorms!  There has been a student-led dorm composting initiative for a few years and it is the time of year again to start it up.  If you are interested in being the compost coordinator for your dorm, reach out to your Residential director and to us at the Zilkha Center at zilkhacenter@williams.edu.

Plus! Look out for Compost Friends in the dining halls on the first and second day of classes!  Give them a high five and thank them for their help orienting new and returning students to the compost system at clearing stations!

Davis Center Social Change Film Series: Decade of Fire and Talkback with Ceci Del Cid
WEDNESDAY, SEPT 4 @ 7PM - PARESKY AUDITORIUM
Throughout the 1970’s, fires consumed the South Bronx. Black and Puerto Rican residents were blamed for the devastation even as they battled daily to save their neighborhoods. In DECADE OF FIRE, Bronx-born Vivian Vázquez Irizarry pursues the truth surrounding the fires – uncovering policies of racism and neglect that still shape our cities, and offering hope to communities on the brink today.
Join Ceci del Cid, Assistant Director of the Davis Center, after the viewing for a discussion of the movie.
