September 2019

Welcome back! As we enter September, students, faculty, and staff are getting back into the swing of things for the start of a fresh school year!  With over 120 Fresh Check Days scheduled this Fall, this will be the busiest Fresh Check Day season yet!  What better way to welcome new students onto campus and showcase how inclusive, united, and caring your campus is.  As you are diligently planning your school's next Fresh Check Day (and doing all the other AMAZING things your position requires), remember to lean on the support that you have on campus and the Programs Team at JPF to avoid becoming overwhelmed.  Put trust in your student volunteers and keep a positive outlook.  After all, Fresh Check Day is all about embracing the positive and uplifting!
September is Sucide Prevention month!  Join our #INIT4LIFE social media campaign by answering the question, "why are you in it for life?" and sending it along with a photo of you or your team to rpapke@jordanporcofoundation.org to create your sharable graphic, like these...
Every semester students across the US sign their name pledging to be a beacon of light to the one in ten students that may be contemplating suicide. Students often leave empowered to be aware, speak up, reach out, and #helpsomeone.  Last spring SUNY Old Westbury proudly displayed student signatures on their student crafted banner.  The banner was displayed beyond Fresh Check Day to remind students how important peer-to-peer support is!
Did you know that September is also National Recovery Month?  It's a month designated to increase awareness and understanding of mental and substance use disorders and celebrate the people who recover.  The University of Georgia featured the Know Your Limit booth at their first Fresh Check Day in August as they welcomed new students onto campus during their orientation week. We loved their creative activities including Do It Sober UGA 1st Year Bucket List, a list of substance free activities for students to do on and around campus.  They also provided Bystander Intervention, where students are faced with scenarios related to substance use to promote intervention at early stages.  Know Your Limit is a great opportunity to not only promote activities outside of drinking but also educate students so that if they do decide to drink they are doing so in a responsible way!
As always, if someone from your team has come up with a great booth activity please share it with us!  We love getting new activities that we can add to the Booth Activity Bank to help boost other schools' Fresh Check Days!
