Featured Resource
Unit Video Podcasts
For our featured resource this month, we want to highlight the SFUSD Math Video Podcasts for the elementary Math Core Curriculum units. Each video podcast is about 4 minutes long and includes a description of the big idea, the progression of math concepts, some planning tips, and suggestions for collaborative planning. These video podcasts are announced on Google Classroom about one week before the units are scheduled to start according to the academic calendar. They are also available on the SFUSDMath YouTube Channel.

Upcoming Math Professional Development
Fall Elementary (K-5) New and Sped Teacher Collaboration Days
Join grade level colleagues and members of the Math Department for collaboration and planning days. These planning days are open to all new teachers, teachers new to SFUSD, and Special Education Teachers who did not attend in 2018-19. Subs are provided by the Math Dept. Teachers will experience a lesson from the math curriculum, learn what the signature strategies look like in action, build your toolkit of strategies to develop access and rigor for all students, and make sense of grade level content and plan an upcoming unit with colleagues. Deepening Elementary Math Content and Pedagogy PLC
Join other Math Teacher Leaders (Site teacher leaders, IRFs, and MISTs) to learn together and deepen your math content and pedagogical knowledge. Together we will explore:
- Big ideas in math and how they fit in the K-5 progression
- Beliefs about our students and about mathematics and how they influence classroom practice.
- How we can help shift those beliefs to build classrooms where each and every student can make sense of math and contribute their math brilliance.
All sessions: 4:00 - 6:00 pm at Curriculum and Instruction - 750 25th Avenue (Cabrillo) Multi-purpose room

Fall K-5 Post Math Milestone Task
The Achievement Assessments Office (AAO) will be hosting district-wide scoring and calibration events for K-5 teachers for the math milestone task district assessments. Please see the flyer for more information and register using the registration form. You will receive 2 hours of extended pay. Bring your student work on the District Assessment Math Milestone Task and calibrate scoring of the Math Milestone Tasks using rubrics and sample work.

- Thursday Oct. 29, 4:00-6:00PM, Location TBD. Support provided for Spanish scoring.
- Wednesday Oct. 30, 4:00-6:00PM, Location TBD. Support provided for Chinese scoring.
Analysis and Next Steps
Your Math Milestones have been scored; now what? Should you move on? Re-engage with the whole class? Pull small groups? Join teachers from around the district to analyze your students’ work and determine your next instructional moves.

Opportunities for Students and Educators
Free Mathematics Festival at San Francisco State
The San Francisco Math Circle is partnering with the Julia Robinson Mathematics Festival to host a free mathematics festival at San Francisco State on Saturday, August 31st from 2:00-4:00pm! This festival will be open to the public. There will be a variety of games, puzzles, and other activities centered on creative, collaborative mathematical inquiry an exploration. San Francisco Math Circle!
Spaces are still available for the San Francisco Math Circle's fall semester (2nd through 5th Grade)! The SF Math Circle is an extracurricular math enrichment program that gives students an opportunity to develop their mathematical thinking skills in a supportive, collaborative, and fun environment. We promote positive attitudes towards math and learning through engaging, hands-on puzzles and games that involve both creativity and critical thinking. Your 18 Paid Professional Development Hours for Educators (known as Prop G or LWEA) are available to all paras and teachers in SFUSD! LWEA PD Hours are meant to differentiate, enhance, or customize learning for each individual (to extend, not replace site PD).How will you use yours?

Teachers 4 Social Justice (T4SJ) Conference
Online registration is now open for the 19th Annual Teaching for Social Justice Conference: Abolition, Reparations & Healing at John O’Connell High School on October 12th. Each year hundreds of educators both locally and nationally gather to network, explore empowering learning environments and develop a professional learning community. California Math Council North Conference at Asilomar
The CMC North Conference, from Dec. 6 to Dec 8, is an opportunity to learn with teachers from around the region about math content and pedagogy. The conference is at a beautiful location in Pacific Grove; it is a wonderful setting for reflecting and learning with your site colleagues.
