Campus Dining News
Be sure to check out the latest UM dining concept in Farmer Hall beginning Monday, Aug. 26. Smooth Sailing offers made-to-order smoothies, iced granita cocktails, snacks and sundries.
Students spoke and UM Dining Services listened with a mild dining hall refresh which includes Cucina, a daily self-serve pasta bar located adjacent to the salad bar. Also, look for an expanded menu of vegan and vegetarian options at Rooted, which has relocated to the back line next to the deli. Falcon Foods now offers a total of 36 beverage options in the dining hall including the new Vitality flavor-enhanced water dispensing station.
Beginning Tuesday, Sept. 3, the City Bowls 2 food truck will be on campus from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. between Anna Irvin Dining Hall and Wills Hall every first and third Tuesday of the month through the end of the semester. More food truck options will be announced in the near future.
The fall 2019 semester is bringing changes to the University’s student meal plans as well. Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with the updated policy by visiting the Housing and Residence Life dining page here.
September Professional Photo Days
University Marketing & Communications is pleased to offer Professional Photo Days. Each month, the University photographer will have two designated mornings available for professional headshots. Anyone on campus is welcome to participate (faculty, staff or students). There is no charge. This month’s Professional Photo Days are Thursday, Sept. 5, and Friday, Sept. 6, from 8 to 11 a.m. Please contact Alyssa Green to reserve a time slot.

Tenure and Promotion Panel Discussion
A Tenure and Promotion Panel Discussion will be held Wednesday, Sept. 4, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Hill House Classroom. Participants will hear tips for success from recently tenured and/or promoted faculty. Refreshments will be served. No registration is required.
Training Opportunity: Canvas Basics
The Malone Center for Excellence in Teaching will conduct Canvas Basics training on Thursday, Sept. 26, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in Wills 115. If you plan to teach online or just want to learn how to better utilize Canvas for your courses, please join Online Instructional Designer Audra White for this session which is the first in a three-part series. Pre-tenured Faculty Summer Stipends
The Faculty Development Advisory Committee (FDAC) is accepting applications for Pre-tenured Faculty Summer Stipends. The Summer Stipend Program is intended to assist pre-tenured faculty in completing research or creative projects at a critical time in their careers. The program provides a $5,000 stipend for two months of continuous full-time research or creative endeavor during the summer of the award year. The deadline for submission for summer 2020 proposals is 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 6. More information about the Pre-tenured Faculty Summer Stipend program and a link to the application form can be found on the FDAC website. Honors Program Special Topics Classes
Now is the time for those interested in teaching a special topics class to academically motivated students in the Honors Program to request honors courses for spring/summer 2020. Please complete the brief online course proposal to request a non-general education honors class. The deadline for proposals is Friday, Sept. 13. Contact Dr. Cathlena Martin with any questions.
QEP Topic Selection Committee Hosting Listening Sessions
This September the UM QEP Topic Selection Committee will host three targeted listening sessions regarding the topics under consideration for the University’s quality enhancement plan, a key part of the SACSCOC reaffirmation effort.
The dates for these sessions are as follows:
- Faculty Listening Session: Wednesday, Sept. 11, 3:30 p.m. in Wills 200 (as part of Faculty Assembly)
- Student Listening Session: Wednesday, Sept. 18, 4:30 p.m. in Farmer Hall
- Staff Listening Session: Friday, Sept. 20, 1 p.m. in Morgan 103
While each listening session has a target audience, all sessions are public and open to anyone who would like to attend. Once sessions are complete, campus constituents will receive information regarding a brief online survey where everyone can once again offer feedback regarding the potential topics. The QEP Topic Selection Committee will then review all feedback and formulate a recommendation for UM’s SACSCOC Reaffirmation Leadership Team. The topic will be determined no later than November, at which time a soon-to-be-formed QEP Development Committee will move the topic into its development phase. Shadowtime
Wade Folger MacDonald presents Shadowtime. Shadowtime refers to an acute realization that the near future could be drastically different than the present. When one experiences shadowtime or the temporal sublime, one’s senses of self and reality are challenged. The works in this exhibition use design, architecture and craft to explore personal moments of sublimity. Through the depiction of complex interpersonal relationships and unknowable historical narratives, we discover a collective inability to grasp fully our profound connection to one another and the world we inhabit.
Opening reception and gallery talk will be held Thursday, Aug. 29, from 4:30 to 6 p.m.
Exhibit open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m, Thursday, Aug. 29, through Thursday, Sept. 19, in The Gallery at Bloch Hall.
Vuorovesi Trio
Vuorovesi Trio (Finnish for tide) is one of the leading woodwind trios of the combination of flute, oboe and clarinet. Comprised of University of Alabama School of Music faculty members Diane Boyd Schultz, Mary Lindsey Bailey and Osiris J. Molina, the trio specializes in the unique repertoire for that combination and has garnered significant critical acclaim. The trio will perform on campus Thursday, Aug. 29, at 7:30 p.m. in LeBaron Recital Hall.
Student Absence Notifications
Guidelines on how excused student absences should be communicated in light of the (pilot) change to Vallo Voice as the official UM email newsletter can be found below. These guidelines were drafted by the Digital Communications Committee and approved by the Technology Advisory Council.
Athletics Travel Absences
The Faculty Athletics Representative will continue to email a weekly travel roster to faculty from the Athletics email account.
Non-Athletics Absences
The organizer of any University organization or activity sanctioned for approved class absence shall be responsible for providing official absence notification, in the form of a PDF document, to all students participating in said activity and/or the students’ professors. In the event that the organizer sends official notification only, and directly, to the participating students, the student is then responsible for providing the notification to their professor(s).
FDAC Funding Workshop
The Faculty Development Advisory Committee (FDAC), in conjunction with the Malone Center, will host a Funding Workshop Wednesday, Aug. 28, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in Wills 200. Participants will learn about new FDAC funding opportunities, review procedures and hear tips and advice for successfully preparing applications. Refreshments will be served. No registration is required.
Fall Registration Open for UM Community School of Music
Have you wanted to learn to play a new musical instrument or are you looking to polish your musical talent? Fall registration is open for private music lessons with the University of Montevallo Community School of Music (UMCSM). Lessons are offered for all instruments and are 30 minutes in length, once per week on campus in Davis Hall. Students of all ages and skill levels are welcome and do not need to be enrolled at UM. UMCSM also offers a no-cost musicianship class for children between the ages of 5 and 11. In this class, students will play interactive music games that help develop music reading and rhythm skills, learn about famous composers, listen and learn about music from around the world and create their own compositions to share with family and friends. Classes are held on Monday nights at 6:15 p.m. in Davis Hall. The first fall class will be Monday, Sept. 9. There is plenty of time to register!
