We will hear about spirituality and religions of the world from The Rev. Becky Goodwin, pastor at Grass Valley United Methodist Church, and The Rev. Lani Howard, retired pastor of Center for Spiritual Living. Becky and Lani, while fervent on their own faith journeys, are enthusiasts of the world’s diverse religions and are active in “Interfaith Nevada County.” They attended the Parliament of the World Religions in Toronto, Canada, in November of 2018, and will offer some perspective from that great event.

I grew up in an Episcopalian household and thought I knew quite a bit about Christianity. My father was a priest and believed it was his duty to provide us with a solid religious foundation. We became friendly with missionaries and visiting priests from the other side of the world—in particular Donald Kanagaratunum from Sri Lanka. My best friend was a Catholic. I had friends who were Jewish and in high school I had a Hindi friend. I had heard of atheists and agnostics but overall my knowledge about other religions or even other Christian denominations was very limited, and I grew up in Berkeley!
So, when I went to college, my parents insisted that I take a world religions class. I’m glad I did. I learned that we are all good people and believe in God even if we believe in a different version of him/her.
I am looking forward to hearing more about world religions from our members, Becky Goodwin and Lani Howard.

Don't miss this September's meeting as we award two Helga Rohl Encouragement Awards to Rebecca Younger and Katherine Abbott. Rebecca is currently working toward a career as a NICU or labor and delivery RN and will be taking Pediatric Nursing, Medical Surgical Nursing and Second Year Lab Nursing. She previously received her LVN in 2009 and has also completed two AA Degrees from Sierra College. She has two children.
Katherine is currently enrolled at Sierra College and will be taking Introduction to Sociology and Women in American History toward eventually obtaining her degree in Sociology in order to become a Social Worker with a specialty working with the elderly. Katherine has a six-year-old son.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
Kelly Ford
I was born in the East Bay Area and lived there until I was 4 years-old. My parents sought to trade the bustle of the city for mountains and trees thus landing us in Grass Valley where my mom grew up visiting her cousins. I met my husband, Will, here in 2011 while I was attending Sierra College and bouncing between majors—from mathematics to biology to art until eventually settling on communications. I graduated magna cum laude from California State University, Sacramento in December 2016 and received my B.A. in Public Relations.
While traveling and enjoying freedom from school, I became pregnant with our daughter, Lillie. Since starting our family, I have been doing infrequent P.R. consulting when I need to exercise my brain, but I mostly spend time on our 11-acre property with Will, Lillie, our two chihuahua mutts, and kitty.
I have a plethora of interests including food, music, art, travel, and gardening. (One of the best ways a friend described me was as “passionate.” ) I love “love” and the beauty of the world, but also binge-watching Netflix in bed on a Friday night.
I joined BPWNC to be in the company of other inspiring women and to contribute to the betterment of our community. It is important to me as a woman and a mother of a beautiful daughter to help other women—as well as men—succeed in life, love, and happiness. I want to foster a community of compassion and understanding rather than the negative feelings that seem to inherently exist in women’s relationships with each other. BPWNC seems like a good place to start in expanding my community as a new mother, and I am excited to be part of this group.

AB 31 (Garcia) No Tax on Tampons (Bill stalled, but temporary exemption for 1/1/2020 to 1/1/2022 included in budget bill)
AB 196 Paid Family Leave (Gonzalez, Sen. Jackson) – Held in Senate Appropriations Committee, under submission on August 30, 2019. Further action unlikely.
AB 732 Reproductive Dignity for Incarcerated People Act (Asm. Bonta, Sen. Mitchell) – Stalled in committee process in 2019. Now a two-year bill.
AB 1524 Medi-Cal Access for Student Health Centers (Chiu) – Stalled in 2019
AB 1760 Privacy for All (Wicks) – Stalled in 2019. Now a two-year bill.

SB 171 Employer annual report on pay data (Jackson) – Held in the Assembly Appropriations Committee on August 30, 2019 and will go no further.
CO-sponsors: AAUW, California Employment Lawyers Assn, and Equal Rights Advocates
Requires that large private employers report pay and job title data annually, broken down by gender, race and ethnicity, to the Department of Fair Employment and Housing. It is modeled on an Obama administration regulation requiring annual reporting to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission that was rolled back by the current administration. Although it was initially reinstated by court order, it remains in litigation, its status uncertain. Supporters consider it an essential tool to address persistent pay gaps for women and minorities. Unlike unsuccessful predecessor bills that would have imposed entirely new pay data reporting requirements, this bill builds on the EEOC regulatory reporting requirements, allowing employers’ reports to the EEOC to satisfy the bill’s requirements, so long as substantially similar data is included.
POSITION: Board approved SUPPORT on April 3, 2019. Shirley Zeff sent a support letter to the Sen.

H.R. 8 Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019 (Thompson, D-CA)
Establishes new background check requirements for firearm transfers between private parties (i.e., unlicensed individuals).
Letter indicating support emailed to Senators Feinstein and Harris on August 16, 2019.
H.R. 1112, the Enhanced Background Checks Act of 2019 (Clyburn, D-SC).
Strengthens the background check procedures for licensed parties to transfer firearms, closing a loophole that allowed a dealer to sell or transfer a firearm if it had not received a response within 3 days through the background check system.
Letter indicating support emailed to Senators Feinstein and Harris on August 16, 2019.
Title X regulatory changes (Title X is the ONLY federal program dedicated solely to family planning) Final rule issued February 26, 2019. Compliance required on July 15, 2019, although litigation is ongoing.)
The US Department of Health and Human Services regulatory changes would drastically alter program eligibility and the nature of family planning services. The changes would undermine the intended purpose of Title X, i.e., providing funding for quality, affordable family planning to low-income individuals.
