Marin Recognizes Overdose Awareness Day
The Marin County Board of Supervisors passed a resolution recognizing August 31 as International Overdose Awareness Day. Our elected leaders have prioritized this issue since the launch of RxSafe Marin in 2014. Board members received a report outlining the coalition’s progress, including a 48 percent reduction countywide in opioid prescribing over four years.  The announcement, along with coalition plans to increase access for addiction treatment, raised awareness through local media including this Independent Journal article.

National Night Out with Mill Valley Police
On August 6, 2019, RxSafe Marin participated in the National Night Out with the Mill Valley Police Department. National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, more caring places to live. This was the first year RxSafe Marin joined in National Night Out and our team brought out the hula hoops and face paints to entertain kids while educating parents about opioid safety, medication disposal, naloxone and treatment options.
Marin Search and Rescue Teams Join the Effort
The Marin Medical Reserve Corps (MMRC) has been conducting community trainings on naloxone (Narcan) use. On August 5th, MMRC Volunteer Marty Frankel and Marin County Substance Use Prevention Coordinator Melissa Struzzo presented a training on the Opioid Crisis and Narcan administration to a group of 74 Marin County Search and Rescue (SAR) members and guests. SAR teams are now equipped with Narcan kits to be deployed on their missions. Opioid overdose remains a leading cause of accidental death in Marin. The MMRC and SAR have mobilized to respond to this crisis. Thank you, Marty & Melissa!

Marin Opioid Prescriptions Fall, Marin County Pivots to Treatment

Opioid prescribing in Marin County has decreased 48% since 2014, when the county’s public health department launched a campaign to discourage overuse. Dr. Matt Willis, the county’s public health officer, told the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday that the decrease “is one of the most dramatic reductions of any county in the state.”
Willis briefed the supervisors on the progress of RxSafe Marin, a coalition consisting of the county’s Department of Health and Human Services, health care providers, law enforcement officials and community members. RxSafe Marin was formed to reduce prescription drug abuse in Marin.
