Dear community,
We are super excited to share with you all the good news we have. Our community has been actively organizing a wide range of activities during the last months and this will continue in the upcoming months. Those include workshops and ECR side-events at conferences. In addition, there are a couple of initiatives in which all of you can be involved and contribute to an ECR perspective in topics such as climate change and teaching climate science.
We summarized some of the activities we have done or we are currently doing. The list is not exhaustive so you can always learn more about us in our social media channels and webpage.
We hope that the newsletter reflects the enthusiasm and energy our active members put in construct a wider and more present network.
Remember that you are always welcome to join us in this adventure by becoming more active in the community (e.g. by joining a Working Group)!

We are now looking for reviewers for the First Order Draft (FOD) of the Working Group II (WGII) that will take place between October and November 2019. We encourage researchers from various career stages to participate, including advanced Master students, PhD students, postdoctoral researchers and early career faculty members. If you do not fit in these categories and are interested in applying, please email us with a short explanation so we can determine eligibility. If you want to participate, please fill out the form by September 15th 2019.
We will assess all the applications and select participants based on motivation and research experience. Moreover, we will try to balance the selection of applicants further based on gender, career stage and geographical location. Accepted participants will be assigned to a chapter and contacted by the end of October 2019. These are not anonymous reviews - you will be individually credited for your contribution, and your comments will be public record. Further information about the review process will be shared with selected participants.

YESS Community, along with the Young Hydrologic Society (YHS) and the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS) are organizing a half day workshop for Early Career Researchers to discuss the joint perspective on the water cycle and governance under climate change, from fundamental processes to societal impacts on December 7th 2019, before AGU Fall Meeting 2019.
|
|
Special emphasis will be put on proposing an early career roadmap to address the future of research on water issues in an interdisciplinary manner. Graduate students and Post-Doctoral level (0-7 years past PhD) in the fields of climate and hydrological science as well as social science are welcome. With the skills and experience brought to the table, the workshop will identify research topics in which early career researchers could develop their career paths. Participants will leave with a common understanding of research agendas and a path forward to develop a joint white paper.

Registration for the workshop is now open.

The YESS community was invited to organize a 90-minute workshop during the Max Planck Symposium for Alumni and Early Career Researchers, which is an international conference that takes place every year at the Harnack House in Berlin (Germany). This year, the conference will be held on September 1st - 4th on the topic "Sustainability, Climate and what Diversity has got to do with it".
Air pollution represents a serious environmental problem, causing an estimated seven million premature deaths per year, and seriously impacting economic activities and ecosystems. To reduce deaths due to air pollution and achieve compliance with air quality regulations, effective and efficient pollution mitigation actions are required. To address air pollution and also other topics that are relevant for society and policy the best available scientific knowledge as well as key skills for clear communication and negotiating the problem and solutions are beneficial.
Therefore, YESS hosts the workshop "Sustainability and air quality. Interactive negotiation role-play" where participants will get information about our organization and take part in a multiple stakeholder role play where they will participate in a policy negotiation simulation on air quality.
The workshop will be hosted by our YESS members: Bell Kuei-Hua Hsu, Claudia Volosciuk, Faten Attig Bahar and Jorge Saturno.

YESS Executive Committee member Faten Attig Bahar and Africa Regional Representative Rondrotiana Barimalala have been selected as a member of African Future Earth Committee (AFEC). AFEC forefronts the establishment of an Africa-wide regional office for Future Earth and to be a bridging-point for the global Future Earth platform with research and societal stakeholders in Africa.
The newly formed Committee has held its first meeting from July 16-17, 2019 in Pretoria, South Africa. Both YESS members attended the meeting and contributed to Regional Future Earth strategy.

YESS community has been invited by the “Trans-disciplinary Research Oriented Pedagogy for Improving Climate Studies and Understanding" (TROP-ICSU) project to participate in the second round reviewing process of the pedagogical tools that are being developed under the project. TROP-ICSU is a global project funded by the International Science Council (ISC), aims to provide the teaching resources for educators in schools and colleges (high school to undergraduate level) to teach climate studies across the curriculum of Science, Mathematics, Social Sciences and Humanities.
TROP-ICSU is one of the official partners of YESS community. Last year, YESS has participated in the first round of the reviewing process. In that opportunity, several YESS members have evaluated and provided feedback on the education tools developed by them. In addition, some YESS members had the opportunity to participate in the TROP-ICSU workshops held in France, India, China, South Africa, Bhutan and Egypt.
|
|
TROP ICSU will very much appreciate the inputs from early-career researchers (PhDs and above) as your feedback will help ICSU enhanced the quality and scientific correctness of the teaching resources. In case you are interested in reviewing some of the tools and contribute to the project, please follow the guidelines given below.
Please note that those who participate in this review will receive an acknowledgement certificate from TROP-ICSU as a recognition for their time and efforts.

The CORDEX-ICRC is planning a dedicated Early Career Scientists (ECS) event focussing on climate information and user interaction.
The session is expected to be an interactive dialogue where senior experts, as well as ECS share their ideas on the topic. Most probably the event will consist out of an expert presentation on climate information and user interaction, a few short presentations by ECS on the topic highlighting their research and ideas, as well as an interactive Q&A session with the event participants. Afterwards, a networking event is planned with snacks and beverages.
The Early Career Scientists Event is organised by the CORDEX ICRC-2019 Organising committee in collaboration with YESS.
