HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS CONNECT WITH ELEMENTARY STUDENTS
Fostering human connection is a very important life skill.  Our "Connect Student Leaders" at WHS thought it was important for us to “connect” with elementary students and wish them a great school year.  High school students are seen as role models and it is our hope that having each HS student connect with one elementary student would help high school students realize the responsibility of their role.  Additionally, our hope is that each elementary student knows that a high school student has their support and thinks they are a special part of our Wayne Local Schools Family .

Therefore, on Friday, August 30 during WHS “Connect” period, All high school students wrote a letter/card to an elementary student in grades 2 through 5. All Pre-K, Kindergarten, and 1st grade classes received one letter written to their teacher for the entire class.   During the week, the letter writing seemed to spread:  secretaries, teachers, and principals wrote letters to the secretaries, teachers and principals at the Elementary!   The entire high school students, staff and administrators walked over to the elementary and delivered a letter/card to a specific elementary student and/or staff member.  The letters were full of encouragement, helpful advice and good luck for the new school year.

Connect student leaders and their teachers did an amazing job with this “connection” project and are very thankful to Elementary Principal Poole and her staff for allowing this opportunity to tighten our bond as a school community and family.  We are planning future “connection activities" with our special new friends!

Workouts for both student-athletes AND adult open workouts!

This fall, Excelerate Athletic Development is offering "open" workouts for any Waynesville student-athlete on Saturdays.  This is an opportunity for the kids to put in some extra work.  Student Informational Flyer

We are also offering "open" workouts for any Waynesville adult on Saturdays.  We have had multiple people ask us to offer these workouts so we thought we would try it.  Community Informational Flyer

Besides the benefit of adults and students getting in better condition, part of the proceeds will go back to the school to pay for the current middle school and high school training.

The workouts will be in the high school gym and weight room.

Last week was our first sessions and we didn't have anyone attend either session.  We are going to offer them again this week to determine if we should continue to offer them this fall.  If we do not have a reasonable attendance, we will cancel the rest of the workouts for the fall and try again in January.

If you have any questions or concerns, please let myself or Josh know.

Thank you,

ATTENDANCE POLICY FOR WAYNE LOCAL SCHOOLS

Warren County Schools
County-Wide Attendance Policy
2019-2020 School Year
Documentation for time out of school

Generally, twelve (12) absences from school (time out of school), which include full days and partial days may be documented by a parent/guardian phone call.

*Medical notes shall NOT count against the 12 absences (time out of school full or partial days) that a parent may excuse.

Absences (time out of school), full and partial days in excess of 12 absences may not be excused by a parent and shall require documentation by the child’s treating physician, nurse practitioner, or physician’s assistant- unless an absence (time out of school, full or partial days) is otherwise excused by the Principal due to unusual circumstances.

The foregoing general rule is for the convenience of school officials in the administration of this attendance regulation. This rule does not create an entitlement for a student to be absent from school 12 times. Application of this general regulation may be waived by school officials where circumstances indicate that its application does not serve the student’s best interest. Those circumstances include, but are not limited to: the student’s attendance in the current or prior school years; instances where students/parents have been adjudicated guilty for truancy related offenses or currently under active supervision or probation. Excused absences from school (time out of school, full or partial days) shall be granted only on the condition of a note from a physician, nurse practitioner, physician’s assistant, or excused by the school Principal.

When students arrive on school property he/she is under the jurisdiction of the school district until the end of the school day. No student may leave the premises during the school day without proper authority. Students that require an early dismissal must present a note from their parent/guardian/custodian to the school attendance office in the morning at the beginning of the school day. In all cases, a parent/guardian/custodian will be contacted to confirm and authorize the early release.

Students arriving to school less than 90 minutes from the start of the school day (late arrival) will be counted as tardy to school. Students that are signed out of school less than 90 minutes from the end of the school day (early dismissal) will be counted as “left early” for school. All tardies and “left early” releases will be unexcused unless otherwise noted in the school policy.

Students that arrive at school after the first 90 minutes of the school day will be marked as a half-day absence. Students that are signed out more than 90 minutes before the end of the school day will be counted as half-day absence.

Unexcused Absences from school: (time out of school full or partial days)
The Ohio Revised Code define a student as being a habitual truant when a student has:
30 consecutive unexcused hours, or
42 unexcused hours in a school month, or
72 unexcused hours in a school year.

If a student acquires 38 hours in one month or 65 hours in one school year of excused and/or unexcused hours, a warning letter will be mailed to parent/guardian.

The school, in compliance with Ohio Truancy Laws has established the following intervention strategies to avoid unexcused hours, partial and full days, tardies and early dismissal.

If a student acquires 30 consecutive unexcused hours, or 42 hours unexcused hours from school in a school month or, 72 unexcused hours in a school year, an Absence Intervention Team meeting will be scheduled by the Truancy Officer, for the purpose of developing an Absence Intervention Plan. The team shall consist of the student, parent/guardian or their designee (a pre-approval FERPA form release for a designee to attend in a parent’s place must be filed by the parent for the designee to participate in the Absence Intervention Team meeting), school administrator or their designee, and attendance officer. The team may also include the school psychologist, counselor, social worker, or representative of a public or nonprofit agency designed to assist students and their families in reducing absences and representative of the Juvenile Court.

If the parent/guardian fails to attend or otherwise respond and participate in the Absence Intervention Team, the school shall do both of the following:
  • Investigate whether the parent/guardian’s failure to attend triggers mandatory reporting to the public children services agency or instruct the Absence Intervention Team to develop an intervention plan for the child notwithstanding the absence of the parent/guardian.
  • If the student fails to comply with the Truancy Intervention Plan and meets the legal definition of habitual truant, charges will be filed in Warren County Juvenile Court.

SPORTS AND BAND UPDATE - 8/30/2019

JUNIOR HIGH VOLLEYBALL

7th and 8th grade volleyball had two matches this week, one against Bellbrook and the other against Monroe. The team continues to progress and are continuing to work hard on learning the various aspects of the game. The Lady Spartans will be back in action on September 3rd against Franklin. The 7th grade match begins at 5:00 pm and the 8th grade is to follow. Tickets are $4.00 at the gate.

JUNIOR HIGH FOOTBALL

Following their scrimmage against Oakwood, the Waynesville Junior High Football kicks off their season in a home contest next Wednesday against the Valley View Spartans. The 7th grade squad plays at 5:00, with the 8th grade to follow. Tickets are $4.00 at the gate.

FOOTBALL

The Spartans came home victorious in last Friday’s scrimmage against Madeira, with a final score of 17-12. Varsity and JV worked together to seal the deal against the Mustangs, keeping the opponent scoreless through the first half. Standout players included Junior Eli St. Pierre and Senior Parker Struewing, both contributing to the strong offensive efforts. The team is excited to open regular season play this Friday at Bexley High School in Columbus. Spartan football will return to Spartan Community Field on September 6th at 7:00 pm against Greeneview.

BOYS SOCCER

The Men’s soccer team capped off their first week back into season with two good matches last Thursday. JV had a hard fought 2-1 win over Oak Hills and Varsity swept their first league match against Preble Shawnee with an 11-1 win. The Varsity Spartans played  at Yellow Springs on Monday. Even with inclement weather, they won 3-0. They finished up the week with the Dixie double header with the Lady Spartans Soccer team. The ladies kicked off and set the winning precedent for the Men who remain undefeated with a 8-0 win over Dixie. JV traveled on Wednesday to Oak Hills but unfortunately wasn’t able to win the rematch, losing 3-0. The Men are away both games next week, with Greeneview (another double header with the girls) being on Tuesday and Milton Union on Thursday.

GIRLS SOCCER

Lady Spartans Soccer Undefeated in Conference Play, 2-2 Overall

Waynesville girls soccer is 2-0 in their conference and 2-2 overall to start their season after winning their last two games.  Tuesday night, the Lady Spartans beat the Dixie Lady Greyhounds 7-0 at home.  Senior captain Megan Handle got her first hat trick of the season scoring 3 goals against Dixie with assists from sophomore Emma Whitaker, senior captain Josie Miller, and junior Jenna Foley.  Whitaker and Foley both scored goals of their own.  Whitaker headed the ball in the back of the net after Foley’s header redirected Junior Hannah Gill’s corner kick and then followed up with a one-on-one goal in the box off of sophomore Savanna Amburgy’s throw-in.  Foley found a gap in Dixie’s defensive line and scored off a beautiful through-ball from freshman Laine Kuhns.  Junior Grace Moore scored her second goal of the season finishing Gill’s direct kick into the box.  Senior captain and goalkeeper Riley Rice recorded her second shut-out of the season.

Last Thursday, the Lady Spartans put 6 in the back of the net as they shut out the Preble Shawnee Lady Arrows.  Foley scored first for Waynesville 5 minutes into the game with a shot to the upper right-hand corner off of sophomore Whitaker’s pass back.  Foley followed up with a second goal later in the first half, sinking a penalty kick after Moore earned a foul in the box.  Whitaker rounded out the first half scoring with two goals ripped from the top of the eighteen.  The Lady Spartans continued their offensive pressure in the second half when Gill played the ball far post during a direct kick that sophomore Kate Handle finished over the goalkeeper’s head.  Moore followed up with a goal of her own a minute later by firing from outside the penalty box off of Whitaker’s pass.  Senior captain Riley Rice got her first shut-out of the season supported by her defenders: Josie Miller, junior Emma Sizer, K. Handle, Kuhns, and senior Kailee Webb.  Waynesville’s offensive attack was supported by excellent possession and ball movement by M. Handle, Amburgy, sophomore Maddie Beuchat, senior Olyvia Blythe, senior Mary Baker, and junior Hope Erbach.  Injured seniors Kelsey Stamm and Jaiden Byram provided encouragement and moral support for the team.  The Lady Spartans look to build on these wins after coming off tough losses to Valley View (0-3) and Monroe (0-1).

The JV starts their season off 0-1-1 as they work to improve every game.  In their tough loss to Monroe, freshman Libby Bulach scored the Lady Spartans’ only goal by finishing a cross from freshman Megan Bailey.  Waynesville’s JV tied Preble Shawnee 1-1 when Bulach knocked down a goal kick and attacked the net grabbing her second goal of the season.  Playing for the JV are juniors Teagan Cassidy and Reagan Hardyman, sophomores Lillian Crumback, Lexi Youtsey, Alayna Hall, Eryn Barrett, and freshmen Gracyn Armstrong, Alyza  Camp, Emmy Lezotte, Katie Dick, Tazz Bailey, Jenna Bulcher, Havana Hanauer, Megan Spencer, Bulach, and M. Bailey.

Come out and support the Lady Spartans next week on Tuesday as the varsity plays at Greenview at 7:30 pm and on Thursday as the JV and varsity host Milton Union at 5:30 pm and 7:15 pm.

This year, we have set up Final Forms to record all your child’s personal data such as address, parents’ names, custody details, emergency contacts, etc. This system will replace the emergency cards we used to have each parent fill out at the open house. You can logon to the website any time before Open House and complete your child’s forms. If you need help, or do not have access to a computer, we will be happy to walk you through the process on a school computer at your child’s Open House.

If you have already signed up your student for a school sport using the Final Forms system, you will use the same login information you have already used for sports. If your child has not participated in a school sport, you will need to set up an account.

  1. Go to https://waynelocal-oh.finalforms.com
  2. Under Parent, either login in with the previous account details you used for sports, or set up a New Account.  (Please remember to use the same account if you have an athlete)
  3. Click on Register Student. Or Add Student
  4. Complete Register a New Student. (if you have already registered your students, you will click on Update Forms)
  5. You can complete the Sports information at a later date. For now, click on Skip, not a student-athlete. If you have already been using final forms for sports, you may see No Changes, Proceed to Forms,   click on that and proceed.
  6. Now you will complete every one of the forms listed in pink/red on the left of the screen. As you complete them, they will turn yellow or green.
  7. Once you have completed all the forms, your student will be sent an email telling them how to complete their portion of the forms.

Any questions, please feel free to call:

As many of you will and may have already noticed, we have a new scoreboard at Spartan Community Field. With the help of the Waynesville Athletic Boosters and Wayne Local School District, we are now equipped with the latest in scoreboard technology including a video board! With the installation of the new scoreboard comes some changes to the old look. The Sponsorship Board identifying those who contributed to the purchasing of the turf will be moving to the southwest wall of the football locker room. As an additional thank you to these sponsors for their continuing support of Spartan Athletics, we will be periodically showcasing their names on the new video board during our events.

If you are interested in becoming a sponsor or supporting the Waynesville Athletic Department or Waynesville Athletic Boosters, please contact Athletic Director, Ryan Hill (rhill@wayne-local.com), or Waynesville Athletic Boosters President, Patrick Cassidy (waynesvilleboosters@gmail.com), for more information. THE MIDDLE SCHOOL SENT LETTERS OF ENCOURAGEMENT TO NORTHRIDGE SCHOOL DISTRICT.
Northridge School District was asking communities to help students begin a successful school year by sending letters of encouragement to their students after the devastating tornado that struck in May.  The students of Waynesville Middle School have been busy fulfilling this request.

Northridge was seeking 1,500 letters to be addressed and written to students in grades pre-k through 12th grade.  After the Memorial Day tornadoes, the community is no stranger to hard times.  The start date for their school district was later than normal this year due to construction and, after the tornadoes in May, the start date was pushed back even further to September 23rd.

Waynesville Middle School students and staff have written over 300 letters of encouragement to support other students going through this difficult time. Thank you to all students that participated.  Spartan Pride reaches far and wide!

Below are some of the letters written by our Middle School Students:

The high school band attended band camp in July at Miami University in Oxford.  While at band camp, our Superintendent received the following email regarding our wonderful students.  In so many ways, we are very proud of our students!
  • We’re visiting Oxford to tour Miami University with our high school senior. We waited in line behind a group of 13 at Bagel & Deli who seemed to be part of a marching band. There was one employee taking orders and he was friendly but seemingly overwhelmed. Each and every student was extremely appreciative and courteous of the food and the service. “You’re doing a really great job!” The entire group thanked him on their way out before their group picture.  Their driver offered to let me cut in line and wished my family a good weekend on his way out before stepping into the Wayne Local van. After reading the van and student shirts, I can only assume they’re your students.  What a great group of young adults!  It was a pleasure to share the restaurant with them, despite the wait.

Warren County Crisis Text Line:
Crises aren't "9 to 5" happenings. They sometimes come on when it's not easy to pickup a phone and call someone.  But you can text for help at any time.  Chat with a trained person by texting "4hope" to 741741.  That person will help you de-escalate and can offer information about local resources where you can find in-person help if needed.

The Crisis Text Line is always there for you, 24/7.  Just send a message (text 4hope to 741741.

Wayne Local Schools is expanding its services with The Education Connection (TEC) to include a Safety/Bully Tip Line.  When you witness verbal, written, physical, or electronic abuse, speak up!  If students hear or see suspicious behavior from another student, they should not ignore it.  We encourage all students to report any concerns about another student or the safety and security of Wayne Local School District.
Anyone can report anonymously a bullying/safety issue by calling the TEC tip line at (513) 855-4350 option 7 or by going online at waynelocal.tipline.info.   The tip line will also allow you to choose an incident number so that you can receive an update on the status or provide new information for this incident and still remain ANONYMOUS.

The information will be immediately forwarded to the proper authority.  All reports are taken very seriously.
There are posters displayed in all buildings with tip line information to remind students to always adopt the mindset of “if you see something or know something, say something.”

WELLNESS NEWS

Head lice are spread most commonly by direct head-to-head (hair-to-hair) contact. However, much less frequently they are spread by sharing clothing or belongings onto which lice have crawled or nits attached to shed hairs may have fallen. The risk of getting infested by a louse that has fallen onto a carpet or furniture is very small. Head lice survive less than 1–2 days if they fall off a person and cannot feed; nits cannot hatch and usually die within a week if they are not kept at the same temperature as that found close to the scalp.

The following are steps that can be taken to help prevent and control the spread of head lice:
  • Avoid head-to-head (hair-to-hair) contact during play and other activities at home, school, and elsewhere (sports activities, playground, slumber parties, camp).
  • Do not share clothing such as hats, scarves, coats, sports uniforms, hair ribbons, or barrettes.
  • Do not share combs, brushes, or towels. Disinfect combs and brushes used by an infested person by soaking them in hot water (at least 130°F) for 5–10 minutes.
  • Do not lie on beds, couches, pillows, carpets, or stuffed animals that have recently been in contact with an infested person.
  • Machine wash and dry clothing, bed linens, and other items that an infested person wore or used during the 2 days before treatment using the hot water (130°F) laundry cycle and the high heat drying cycle. Clothing and items that are not washable can be dry-cleaned OR sealed in a plastic bag and stored for 2 weeks.
  • Vacuum the floor and furniture, particularly where the infested person sat or lay. However, spending much time and money on housecleaning activities is not necessary to avoid re-infestation by lice or nits that may have fallen off the head or crawled onto furniture or clothing.
  • Do not use fumigant sprays or fogs; they are not necessary to control head lice and can be toxic if inhaled or absorbed through the skin.

To help control a head lice outbreak in a community, school, or camp, children can be taught to avoid activities that may spread head lice.

For more information on head lice you can visit the following website:  https://www.cdc.gov/parasites/lice/head/index.html
