REMATCH 2020
Valadao launches 2020 bid to recapture seat: Former Rep. David Valadao (R-Hanford) made his candidacy official Wednesday, announcing he would seek a rematch against Rep. TJ Cox (D-Fresno) in 2020.

Edged out of his seat by a razor-thin 862 votes, Valadao is among the most-highly coveted recruits for national Republicans to capture a seat.

An internal GOP poll conducted in June placed Valadao in a 16-point lead over Cox head-to-head.

Drawing contrasts early: In his announcement statement, Valadao did not hold back on criticism of his successor's eight-month tenure.

"I cannot continue to sit silent while TJ Cox pursues a radical liberal agenda that hurts our communities. The Central Valley needs a full-time representative that people can be proud of and trust."

Nunes doesn't pull punches: During the Fresno County GOP's Lincoln-Reagan event Wednesday, Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Hanford) referred to Cox as a "total loser" whose various financial improprieties haven't been fully vetted.
PAYOUT FOR ME, TOO
Merced Superintendent gets payday for resigning amid harassment probe: McSwain Union Elementary School District Superintendent Steve Rosa was given his walking papers last week.

The superintendent, who was accused of various types of harassment in his post, will receive his full 2019-2020 salary of $125,000 and health benefits for agreeing to leave the district.

In the process, he made no admission of wrongdoing.

FRESNO GRIZZLIES

Extra runs in extra innings: The Fresno Grizzlies came out on top in an offensive slugfest on Wednesday, defeating the Tacoma Rainiers 14-13 in 1o innings.

The victory flipped the bottom of the PCL divisional standings, as the Grizzlies are back in third place.

What's next: The Grizzlies close out their final series against the Rainiers tonight. First pitch is 7:05 p.m.

WHAT WE'RE WATCHING
Is there really any pop for a Soda Tax in California? With the California Legislature backing a 12-year ban on cities taxing soda and rejecting a statewide soda tax, activists from the San Joaquin Valley are partnering up with Bay Area organizations to push local and state initiatives to enact such a tax.

The big question: after two big defeats, can they muster support against Pepsi, Coke, and Dr. Pepper?
