We have been very pleased with the interest and feedback for our first webinar held in July "Strategies for increasing allied health recruitment and retention in rural Australia" presented by Dr Kristine Battye.

We are now looking to you our members for ideas on future topics or areas of interest that you would be interested in hearing more about.
Some ideas already are:

If you have other ideas please let us know, or maybe you would like to present a webinar in your area of research or expertise, if so please contact us. We would also like to hear from our student members and what areas of interest you would like us to cover.

$11.7 million investment to keep Australians out of hospital
The Australian Government's Medical Research Future Fund is a $20 billion investment in the health of Australians, our economy and the sustainability of our health system.
The fund is supporting Australia’s greatest minds to discover the next penicillin, pacemaker, cervical cancer vaccine or bionic ear. These breakthroughs by Australian researchers have improved the health and wellbeing of billions of people worldwide - and future Australian breakthroughs will be similarly beneficial.

Canberra universities join forces to help change the face of rural health
Construction began this week on a new federally funded joint-venture between the University of Canberra and the Australian National University, right next to the South East Regional Hospital.
Set to be completed in April next year, similar health training centres for UC medical, nursing, midwifery and allied health students will also be built in Cooma and Moruya.
The University of Canberra's executive dean for the Faculty of Health Sciences, Professor Michelle Lincoln, said the idea for the new training centre arose after consultations revealed the difficulties of attracting health professionals to the region.
She said students who experience rural life are more likely to forge a career outside metropolitan centres. More here

Updates - Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety
The Royal Commission will hold a public hearing in Melbourne from Monday 9 September 2019 to Wednesday 11 September 2019 and on Friday 13 September 2019. The Royal Commission will inquire into: the policy responsibilities of the aged care system, the social service system and health systems, the interfaces between the aged care system, social service system and health systems the profile of younger people in residential aged care and any specific circumstances which drive the admission of younger people into residential aged care, the care of a younger person while they are in a residential aged care facility, and how this may impede their exit from residential aged care, the special challenges faced by younger people seeking appropriate accommodation and the nature of services typically provided to younger people in residential aged care.
Community Forum Townsville
Townsville will be the site of the Disability Royal Commission’s first Community Forum.
When: Monday, 9 September 2019, from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm.
Where: The Ville Resort-Casino, Sir Leslie Thiess Drive, Townsville QLD 4810.
Chair of the Disability Royal Commission, the Hon Ronald Sackville AO QC, Commissioners Ms Andrea Mason OAM, Dr Rhonda Galbally AC, Ms Barbara Bennett PSM and the Hon John Ryan AM, will be at the community forum to hear from people who have experienced or have information about violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation of people with disability.

- Developing a National Primary Health Care Data Asset: consultation report is now published on the AIHW Primary Health Care Data Development page.
- Indigenous women are suffering more injury and death from domestic and family-related violence, and more children are remaining separated from their families, due to a lack of appropriate accommodation, UNSW Sydney and University of Tasmania research for The Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute will reveal. The findings from the report will be presented at the National Housing Conference 2019, running from Tuesday 27 to Friday 30 August: www.nhc.edu.au.
- Consumption of sugary drinks is common among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander infants and toddlers, and it could be down to water quality, according to a study from The Australian National University (ANU).
