September 14: Electric Vehicle Day - San Diego
On Saturday, September 14, Cleantech San Diego, SDG&E, and the Center for Sustainable Energy will host the seventh annual Electric Vehicle Day - San Diego, a free test-drive event taking place at Liberty Station as part of National Drive Electric Week. San Diego’s EV Day attracts thousands of attendees interested in exploring different models of EVs, vehicle incentives they can qualify for, and a hassle-free opportunity to learn more about the perks of driving electric. Southern California Energy Innovation Network Update
The Southern California Energy Innovation Network (SCEIN) recently conducted a program review with the California Energy Commission (CEC). Key milestones and accomplishments include:
- As of June 2019, SCEIN conducted 22 Entrepreneur Intake Sessions that reviewed 47 energy startup companies and accepted 38 into the program
- SCEIN member companies are employing 217 people
- SCEIN graduate eMotorwerks was acquired by Enel X, and has seen employment growth from 50 people when they began the program to 150 people now
- Since acceptance into the program, 12 member companies have raised a total of $43.1 million in private capital and $5.8 million in public funding, doubling the capital raised since December 2018
- 14% of current member companies have female C-suite leadership and 21% have minority C-suite leadership
- The DOC EDA i6 grant award is enabling enhanced program outreach and collaboration in the Inland Empire
- The CEC has approved SCEIN companies EndLiS Energy, Icarus RT, Ivy Energy, and Luciant to receive $150,000 CalSEED Concept Grant Awards
- SCEIN companies indicate in program surveys that they are achieving accelerated business milestones as a result of program participation
SCEIN has conducted two additional Entrepreneur Intake Sessions and accepted South 8 Technologies, Controlled Thermal Resources, and Luciant into the network, bringing current program participation to 29 energy startup companies.

CleanSpark Awarded $287,000 Software Controls and Energy Storage Contract
Cleantech San Diego member and Southern California Energy Innovation Network company CleanSpark, a microgrid startup with advanced engineering, software, and controls for innovative distributed energy resource management systems, was recently awarded $287,000 to provide software controls and energy storage for an industrial equipment sales facility in San Jose, Costa Rica. CleanSpark's solution will integrate a scalable 223-kilowatt hours of battery storage paired with a 221-kilowatt solar photovoltaic system and a back-up generator for use during extended utility outages, all driven by CleanSpark's mPulse controls platform. SDG&E to Launch Major Program to Build Chargers for Electric Buses, Trucks, and More
To support regional and statewide goals to reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions from tailpipes, SDG&E will launch a major effort to help electrify large vehicles and industrial equipment, revving up zero-emission transportation beyond passenger vehicles. On August 15, SDG&E received approval from the California Public Utilities Commission to build charging infrastructure for a minimum of 3,000 plug-in medium-and heavy-duty electric vehicles and equipment, including transit buses, school buses, delivery trucks, and forklifts. November 6: Cleantech a Focus of the Third Annual San Diego Innovation Showcase
For a third year, the San Diego Innovation Council (SDIC), a group of representatives from San Diego's academic technology transfer offices, incubators, and other organizations working to support the commercial success of local startups, is organizing the San Diego Innovation Showcase to highlight innovations arising from research institutions or connected to startup programs in San Diego and Southern California. November 8: 11th Annual Lesley K. McAllister Symposium on Climate and Energy Law
On November 8, the Energy Policy Initiatives Center at USD will host the Eleventh Annual Lesley K. McAllister Symposium on Climate & Energy Law, with the theme “The Future of Energy in a Changing Climate.” Recent wildfires in California have highlighted the challenge of operating an electric utility in a changing climate. Lawmakers, regulators, and industry stakeholders are considering whether changes are needed to adapt to the impacts of climate change, including wildfire, sea level rise, and heat waves.
