Biodiversity Month and More

Did you know our LGA is home to over 230 species of Birds and over 590 species of plants? That we have a population of Echidnas living along the Salt Pan Creek?

During September and October we are encouraging residents to appreciate the diversity in our area and look for the interesting in our LGA. You can help protect the amazing diversity of life by planting some native plants in your backyard and creating homes and food for our native animals. Council is giving away free native plants (4 per household).
You can come along to our free workshop at Riverwood Community Center to learn how to grow native gardens in small spaces or Bankstown Library on the 31st of August to get advice on how to bring biodiversity into your own backyard.

These events and a host more are being provided free to residents across September and October.

Free Native Plants for your garden
Celebrate Biodiversity in your own backyard by creating your own native garden.Native plants are a good choice in gardens as they use less water than many non-natives and establish quickly. Come and collect them at these locations (limit of four native plant seedlings per household)
Plants are available from Saturday 31st August-Friday 6th September:
•Bankstown Library and Knowledge Centre, 80 Rickard Road, Bankstown
•Earlwood Library and Knowledge Centre, Corner Homer and William Streets, Earlwood; and
•Riverwood Library and Knowledge Centre, 80 Kentucky Rd, Riverwood.

Native Bees
Our area is home a number of native bee species, most of which are solitary. One species however, is able to be kept in a hive and is a wonderful addition to any native garden. The native bee Tetragonia is a small, black, stingless bee that helps pollinate plants, especially native plants. These harmless native bees provide a wonderful service to gardens and the environment and are much smaller than the European honey bee. Come to our introductory session and learn how to keep native bees as well as encourage them into your garden.
