All Around Math

MATH + ART
ARTIST FOCUS:  M.C. ESCHER

Artist and Mathematician M.C. Escher was born in 1898 in the Netherlands. His fascinating works containing impossible spaces, tesselating shapes, and amazing architecture are great examples of how art and math are beautifully intertwined.

________________________________________________________

Check out his famous print Metamorphosis 1 (below) and see how his shapes and forms change as they move from left to right.

Check out these great examples of tessellations and positive and negative space.

What is a tessellation?

A tessellation is a regular pattern made up of flat shapes repeated and joined together without any gaps or overlaps.

In fact, tessellations are all around us! Look for them on tiled walls, animals, plants, and even food!

What is positive and negative space?

Positive space refers to the main focus of a picture (ex. recognizable subjects like a person or a tree). Negative space is the space in and around the positive space (ex. the background).
