Climate Change, Social Justice, Affordable Housing: Relevant Issues

At the 2019 Design Matters Conference, we'll be looking to the near future and the various ways architecture organizations must aim to be relevant. Some of those are internal decisions and some of those are foisted upon organizations by larger real world events. In that spirit, here is a short list of timely articles on big topics that should be of interest to community-engaged design organizations.

The Chicago Architecture Center recently presented the inaugural edition of its Vincent Scully Masterclass Series, which much like Scully's famed Yale classes, makes architectural history engaging and accessible to general audiences. Watch video clips of Reed Kroloff delivering lectures on American architecture as part of the series.
The National Building Museum and its long-standing Vincent Scully Prize recognizes "exemplary practice, scholarship, or criticism in architecture, historic preservation, and urban design." Now in its 19th year, the 2019 Prize goes to landscape architect Elizabeth K. Meyer.
[After teaching for more than 60 years, Vincent Scully passed away in 2017. Read critic Blair Kamin's Vincent Scully obituary in the Chicago Tribune.]

The Cultural Landscape Foundation (TCLF) is creating an International Landscape Architecture Prize that will begin in 2021. What caught our attention was the webpage Why Create a Prize? that details the rationale, history, and funding for the prize. The Nominee Qualifications, Jury Process, and Governance may also be of interest to architecture organizations. We enjoyed their method for testing the prize criteria: If the Prize Had Existed 50 Years Ago, Who Might Have Received It?
