This August, when Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia along with other peoples all around the world were celebrating the 30 years of the Baltic Way, was full of events, speeches, memories, and well-wishing (a summary here). The Latvian Institute also took part, organising media visits, publishing a thorough factsheet and creating a short film that, under the hashtag #actbalticway, encourages to evaluate how the Baltic Way works today – in politics, in everyday life, in relationships, and elsewhere. For the third consecutive year, the Latvia-based language technology company Tilde has won the “Olympics” of the machine translation technology – the WMT 2019 competition, outperforming online translation platforms such as Google, Microsoft, and others. More

Riga listed among world's best student cities

The new study year has started, and, for the first time, Riga has been included in the annual list of the world’s best student cities. The authors note that Riga boasts three leading universities, all of which are ranked in the the QS World University Rankings - Riga Technical University, Riga Stradiņš University, and University of Latvia. More

On August 30, Latvia submitted its update report to MONEYVAL – the Council of Europe’s Committee of Experts on the Evaluation of Anti-Money Laundering and the Financing of Terrorism, saying that a major overhaul of the legal framework, banking regulator and law enforcement is "yielding tangible results". More
