Housing Authority Seeks More Housing Vouchers

On Monday, August 26, 2019, the Salem Housing Authority voted to approve an application for, and accept funding from, HUD for 75 Mainstream Housing Vouchers for "Non-Elderly Persons with Disabilities" (NED) valued at $443,367. This will provide additional housing vouchers for homeless, formerly homeless, and at-risk households.

During the City Council Meeting, Council accepted a petitioner-initiated vacation of a portion of Dogwood Drive and two petitioner-initiated annexations in Ward 5 and in Ward 6, authorized the execution of the Inter Governmental Agreement between the United States Department of Justice, Drug Enforcement Administration, and the City of Salem for the operation of a narcotics task force in FY 19/20, and heard a quarterly report on Salem’s economic development activity.

Please note that Council’s consideration of revenue options (the proposed operating fee) will be September 23

The Salem City Council typically meets every second and fourth Monday at 6 p.m., in Council Chambers.

Speak Up on Stream Temperatures

Community members are invited to review and comment on the City of Salem's report of efforts to address warm stream temperatures.The Temperature Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) Plan's Annual Report provides an update on activities by the City during Fiscal Year 2018-2019. Public Comment closes September 9, 2019.

Interested in art? The Salem Public Art Commission invites everyone to participate in a community conversation about public art. This free event will be Wednesday, September 25, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Pringle Community Hall. Join local arts enthusiasts and share your thoughts on how everyone can work together to create a vibrant and inclusive art scene. Check out the invitation for more details.

Forums Focus on Proposed
Sidewalk Behavior Rules

Learn more about the City of Salem's proposed Sidewalk Behavior Ordinance at two public forums planned in September. The goal of the forums is to share information about the proposed ordinance, answer questions, and listen to comments from the public.The first is at Wednesday, September 4, at Union Gospel Mission, 345 Commercial St. NW, starting at 5 p.m. The second will be Friday, September 13, from noon-1:30 p.m.

Plastic Bag Restrictions Affect
Small Retailers Beginning September 1

To protect the environment and encourage shoppers to bring reusable bags, plastic carryout bags will no longer be offered by Salem retailers at checkout beginning September 1.

Some City Offices Closed for Labor Day

The Salem Public Library and several City offices will be closed on Monday, September 2, in recognition of Labor Day. Others closures include Center 50+, Salem Municipal Court and some Civic Center and other City offices. All emergency services and the 24-hour Public Works Line (503-588-6311) will be available without interruption. All offices will reopen at normal business hours on Tuesday, September 3.
