Alpha Nu Omega
Alumni Association News
Crickets !!!!
That is what the response has been for getting candidates for the new Alumni Board starting this year. This organization does not run itself. You have been benefiting from the efforts of a few. It is time for payback. You can do it.
As you all know, the prime mission of the Alpha Alumni Association is to provide deserving members of the Alpha active chapter with scholarship support for education pursuits. Previous recipients have all passed muster in this regard, but every member has benefited from their Alpha experience and other Alumni support.
Each of you needs to spearhead our continuing work in this area. Not just in supporting the scholarship fund, but providing continuing leadership in our organization.
It would seem logical that those of you who have benefited from your Alpha experience would step up to provide a new perspective and energy to our organization so we can continue our work. The Alumni Association actually went inactive for several years not that long ago and the Active Chapter was also dangerously low in membership. Both of these issues have been corrected, but it obviously shows that it takes effort to continue our Brotherhood.
The Alpha Board consists of the following positions:
- President
- Secretary - will continue
- Treasurer - will continue
- 4 additional voting members - one on ballot
- Up to 5 appointed members (currently 3)
The Board essentially carries on periodic meetings by conference calls. There is limited burden of time and location. The only qualification is being a dues paying member of the Alumni Association and a willingness to serve.
We desperately need someone to step up to be President. There will be much support from the previous President, who has agreed to remain as liaison to the Active Chapter, and other members of the Board and Scholarship Committee who have previously served. The current Secretary and Treasurer will again be on the ballot to provide continuity and collaboration. So there is real support. It would be preferable to have a younger member (within the last 30 years) as President so that the organization remain viable and not a huge gap between the Alumni Association and the Active Chapter.
Therefore, it is time to step up if you have a love for Alpha and a desire to use your love to help steer the Organization into the future.
Please send your name or the name of a Brother who you believe should be a member of the Board. Names will be put on a ballot for the annual meeting on September 21.
Please don’t hesitate. Send your response to Secretary Jim Klang at
If you cannot serve please, consider still supporting our Alumni Association with a dues donation and donation to the UMD Alpha Nu Omega Scholarship.

Our organization needs your support to continue our work. Please pay your 2019 dues and consider a generous tax deductible donation to our Alpha Scholarship fund. Dues are still only $30 and donations can be made in multiples of $25 via our website.

This Year's Scholarship
This year $10,500 has been awarded in scholarships.
A portion of our Saturday night program at the 60th anniversary will be to recognize our scholarship recipients and get a chance to know them better.
Your Scholarship Committee,
Chairman Tom Kraus
Mike Dean
Dennis Johnson
The ΑΝΩ Alumni Association currently offers the following scholarships to members of the active chapter:
- The John L. Banks Memorial Scholarship
On March 29, 1966, Air Force Lieutenant John L. Banks died when his C-130 crashed in Vietnam. John exemplified the achievement of Alpha's objectives -- academic success, active participation in fraternity and other organizations, and a strong, personal allegiance to his brothers. Following his death, the Alumni Association renamed its scholarship for academic success the "John L. Banks Memorial Scholarship" in his honor.
- The Daryl B. Knodt Memorial Scholarship
In the years that followed, alumni became increasingly aware of the extra efforts of some Alphas who worked hard for the fraternity and were truly in need of financial assistance. In 1978, responding to those efforts, alumni expanded their commitment to Alpha Nu Omega by adding another scholarship. Whereas the John L. Banks scholarship emphasized scholastic achievement and fraternity participation, the Daryl B. Knodt Scholarship emphasized fraternity participation and need. That concept conformed to the interests of Daryl B. Knodt, an active and loyal member of Alpha Nu Omega, who died in a car accident on December 21, 1968. His contributions to the Fraternity have been memorialized in the "Daryl B. Knodt Memorial Scholarship."
- The Warren F. Orrick Memorial Scholarship
During the early 1960s, Alphas were involved in many fraternity, school and community activities. One of the more active was Warren "Butch" Orrick. Always eager, Butch provided the motivation (and often the "place") for the next event. Upon his death, June 14, 1990, Butch's estate provided funds to be used for ΑΝΩ scholarships. In respect for Butch's extraordinary level of participation and academic success, the "Warren F. Orrick Memorial Scholarship" was created.
Over the years the Alpha Nu Omega Alumni Association members continued to donate funds for scholarship support. These have been invested as an endowed fund. Earnings together with ongoing contributions have supported scholarship since 1964.
Recognizing that student leaders and the organizations they lead are essential components of a successful and positive educational experience, and given Alpha Nu Omega Alumni Association’s long history of supporting members who exhibit leadership, academic success, and active participation in campus life with scholarships; Alpha Nu Omega Alumni Association established the Alpha Nu Omega Alumni Association Scholarship Program in 2008.
Guided by five core principles, the membership of Alpha Nu Omega fraternity has contributed substantially to campus life at UMD since its inception in 1959 and this scholarship program continues that tradition.
This donation is made in honor of Alpha Nu Omega founders and alumni in the belief that academic achievement and student leadership are important attributes to college and lifetime success.
