Pastor's Devotional...

Since statistics have been taken, work /job/career dissatisfaction is at its highest ever; 2/3 of people would change careers if possible. Unhappy with your work? Read on. Know someone who is? Share this with them.
Remember God is a worker; He worked to create the universe. He also intends for us to be fulfilled through our work as He was. Before the Fall and sin cursed labor, it was a joy to mankind/Adam. In Colossians 3:23-24 we are exhorted to work with all our heart, as unto the Lord, not men, it “is the Lord Christ you are serving” at work.
Modern researchers (sociologists and industrial psychologists) like professors Dr. Amy Wrzesnewski (Yale) and Jane Dutton (U. Michigan) have even coined the term “job crafting” for a process by which we can alter our actual job, relations involved in its performance and our attitude toward it.
They researched “devalued work” to discover that certain people in the most menial jobs loved them! In particular, janitors/cleaners in a large hospital included such a small subgroup who did not see their job as primarily cleaning but as being a part of the healing team, taking time to chat with and encourage patients, bring them a needed item, offer prayer, etc. Their job satisfaction was far higher than not only other cleaners but also more professional staff like nurses and therapists.
Turns out doing our job “unto the Lord”, taking advantage of or creating opportunities to serve through it makes a more positive impact than size of salary and status/desirability of the job!
This Labor Day season, let’s explore with the Lord how better to serve Him by better serving others (co-workers and clients) in our workplace.
Prayer: O God, You are a worker, laboring to create the universe. Jesus, You worked as a carpenter in our midst; You get our work issues. Holy Spirit, guide me in redeeming and transforming my job/work/career. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
