Introduction

This is the 16th weekly newsletter for Phase 3 of the Runway 9/27 Reconstruction project at the Duluth International Airport (DLH).  The purpose of the weekly newsletters will be to provide updates throughout the project regarding construction impacts, runway closures, temporary runway conditions, and other information as needed. Earlier versions of the newsletters can be found at the link provided at bottom of this newsletter. At any time, you may request a construction update by contacting the project contacts listed in this newsletter.

 

Runway 9/27 Construction Progress

This was the last week of construction before Runway 9/27 opens full length (expected this evening). Phase 3D is underway, and includes the reconfiguration of Runway 9/27 from shortened condition to full length, and includes removing the temporary paint markings and lighting. It also includes placing the new runway distance remaining signs to correspond to the new length, and replacing existing sign panels to reflect the new taxiway naming shown in the figure below.

Runway/Taxiway Operations - Phase 3D

Phase 3D is ongoing, and commenced on Wednesday, August 28th. Runway 3/21 and Taxiway C are both open and available full length. Runway closures will consist of Runway 9/27. Taxiway closures will consist of the new eastern portion of Taxiway A, Taxiway A3, Taxiway A5, Taxiway H, and Taxiway E.

Phase 3D is anticipated to be complete by later tonight, the evening of August 30th, and Runway 9/27 and 3/21 will both be available full length.


For immediate information on the current airfield status, always check current NOTAM's before you fly.

New Taxiway Naming
At the conclusion of Phase 3D on August 30th, several Taxiway A connectors will be re-named so that all Taxiway A connectors are alphanumeric.  Please be aware of the new taxiway designations.  See below for a figure showing the revised naming conventions.  The taxiway name changes will be communicated via NOTAM starting August 30 and will be depicted in the airport diagram update that is published on October 10.  

Schedule Updates

The schedule has generally held throughout the summer, and Runway 9/27 is expected to be open full length by later tonight, August 30th.  Depending on weather or unforeseen conditions, the sub-phases are as follows:

Phase 3A: Taxiway A work - Complete

Phase 3B: Runway 27 Displaced Threshold Setup - Complete

Phase 3C: Runway 9/27 and Taxiway A5 - Complete

Phase 3D: Removal of Displaced Threshold (August 28th - 30th) (Runway 9/27 closed, Runway 3/21 open)

Phase 3E: Sawcut Grooving (October 1st - 12th) (Runway 9/27 closed)
