September 2019
Welcome to this month's newsletter
MNC has recently received some important new funding – a grant through Skilling Queenslanders for Work, which will employ five students for six months part time to complete a traineeship program in Business Certificate I, specialising in events management. (More info below)
CHASM HOUSING was active during August, reaching a milestone with a 'turning the sod' ceremony for its relocatable house and raising funds for Homelessness Week. And next month sees the annual Obi Art Prize and the Centre's Open Day – note them in your diary!

Skilling Queenslanders for Work
MNC was a successful tender in this program funded by the State Government. The aim of the 'Maleny Events Squad' program is to employ ten local community members identified as 'long-term unemployed' in a 6-month full time paid traineeship to complete Certificate 1 Business including Barista and Responsible Alcohol certificates.
The program is due to commence in early September 2019. The criteria for the trainees can be obtained by writing to events@malenync.org.au. Participants ideally should be between 18 and 45 years of age and be unemployed for at least 6 months.

Funds for the homeless

CHASM would like to thank everyone who donated money or bought raffle tickets during our fundraising for Homelessness Week. We raised a total of $684 which has been donated to MNC for their emergency accommodation fund. We would also like to thank the MNC volunteers who helped staff the fundraising table during that week – your help was very much appreciated!

'Turning the sod'

CHASM reached a key milestone in our Small House Project last month, with Councillor Jenny McKay officiating at the turning of the sod event on Friday 23 August on the land CHASM has sub-leased from the Maple Street Co-op. The event was well attended and there is considerable excitement that we are one step closer to placing our small relocatable house in the garden.

Volunteer of the month:
Punitha Le Ambre
I moved to Maleny 5 years ago and started volunteering with the Neighbourhood Centre in the kitchen and in the garden. I love to create food with my heart and allow the hand to flow – nothing complicated, it’s simplicity. It is nice to see people happy enjoying good healthy food.
There are lovely people who come and go as volunteers, which has helped me to learn and to grow. When people have a problem or are feeling troubled the volunteers are quick to help. That is so encouraging.
MNC is like the body of this town for me.
