It's been almost a year since the Queenstown community sent a very clear message to the Queenstown Airport Corporation (QAC). The vast majority do not support further airport expansion.

When the QAC then turned its sights on Wanaka the response was the same - except louder, bigger and even better organised.

So let's be clear here. The combined communities of Queenstown and Wanaka have spoken clearly. They've said a great big "No" to more airport expansion - at least until there is genuine consultation, better infrastructure funding and an authentic, truthful statement about where we are all heading in terms of climate change, sustainability and tourism being carefully curated as a quality, socially licensed element of our local economy.

We don't want tourism to be a brutal, corporate numbers game where the profits head out of town and leave only low wages and ghetto like worker accommodation behind. And yes Air New Zealand - that does include you in spite of your sometimes funny safety videos and the fact we are very proud to get on your black-ferned, koru-tailed planes when returning from overseas.

Tourism needs communities - and we need to be proud of where we live.

So - on Monday, 10.00 am,  at an extraordinary council meeting this all comes to a head. The drama is pure Shakespeare - with irony, fate and destiny all playing a major part.

Jim Boult will be defined by how he plays Monday's showdown. The majority view seems to be that he's been a good Mayor, even a very good Mayor - he's got stuff done, including our $2 buses and an imminent bed tax. He's also been at the vanguard of moves to create affordable housing via the local housing trust and a very effective housing task force. But he's increasingly struggling with perceived or actual conflicts in terms of heading a major local tourism company and having a history that includes major construction projects and being CEO of Christchurch International Airport.

Mayor Boult has indulged in a bit of benign dictatorship. He's done it well and often committees just end up as talking shops. However it has left many councillors looking mute and ineffective. Monday is their chance to show us what they are made of. It's also a chance for Mayor Boult to lay aside the heavy weapons and show us that he can listen, really listen - as well as act.

At stake is almost everything that defines our community. Do we have a dignified future where we are in charge of our own destiny? Or are we to be the silenced inhabitants of a sad Disneyland where New Zealand sells the last remaining bits of our scenery, environment and culture for some short term cash that benefits only a few, already rich, corporate people in Auckland?

Profits and jobs are positive things - but greed along with the destruction of communities and our environment come at a price that nobody can justify.

The QAC and their boss Colin Keel have already made their position clear. They are not for changing. They are pro-growth - seemingly at any cost. Their strategy, communications and statements have shown no humility or sensitivity. They are not listening. Their board directors are not from here. It's too late for them to change, as such a seismic 180 degree pivot would have zero credibility.

It's not too late for our council or our Mayor. The two main airport lobby groups have served fair warning that the Mayor's handling of the airport debate may border on being illegal - and any procedural liberties will be pounced on with barristers.

How Jim Boult handles Monday will define him and us. We also need to hear substantial and intelligent input, and firm action, from the many mute councillors who have been conspicuous so far by their silence. It's election year and just jumping on a band wagon at the last minute won't cut it.

Let's hope this has a happy ending. War is not good for anybody.

In just over a year the council funded Startup Queenstown Lakes has made huge progress, with a national Tourism Tech summit today marking a new level of maturity and effectiveness.

As everyone knows, startups are tough. Investors are nervous putting money into unproven ideas and early stage entrepreneurs are often lacking in the techniques necessary to get new money into their businesses.

That's the role of Startup Queenstown Lakes. To give confidence to investors and help young businesses make successful business pitches for funding and development partners.

Crux spoke this afternoon to Startup Queenstown Lakes CEO James Burnes about progress to date and the importance of today's summit. The event today was made up of exhibits from tech companies along with presentations from different players in the tech and start up space. It's hoped it will become a national event that will define Queenstown as a major focal point for development of tourism related technology.

The Chairman of the Trust that is behind Startup Queenstown Lakes is David Wallace. He told Crux that the synergy between tourism and tech was not necessarily a direct link.

"Somebody might work, for example, with the the concept of mountain climbing and ropes. It's not tourism, yet it has the tourism link to it. But you know, someone coming up with some new climbing concept or a new type of equipment. Those are the sorts of things that I think allow us to play to the strengths of Queenstown and Wanaka."

We asked David Wallace how he would score Startup Queenstown Lakes in its first year of operations.

"Look, I think we're progressing at about the right speed. You know, we are finding our feet and Rome wasn't built in a day but we are getting there. We are getting there slowly and it hasn't been smooth.  Actually framing what we can do has been the hardest part and trying to understand what's happening in the environment and trying to get things right. There's been a lot of thinking going into it and I don't think we're 100% of the way there. I think we're getting close."
The Queenstown Lakes District Council has agreed multi-year funding for the Startup Queenstown Lakes project.

The Air New Zealand flight, which will touch down in Invercargill tonight, marks the first regional airport to host a regular jet service.

The airport was recently upgraded with a new baggage screening area and secure passenger department lounge ahead of the new flights.

Great South chief executive Ann Lockhart said the flights were a game changer for the region, with estimates an additional $11.3 and $12.5 million could be directly injected into the Southland region over the next three years.

"It's the start of an exciting new chapter for regional connectivity and signifies endless opportunities for Southland," Ms Lockhart said.

"The direct flights will make it more viable for people to consider Southland as a destination and give local exporters increased access to both the Auckland and international marketplace."

It had been a collaborative effort to make the jet service a reality, she said.

The timing of the flights - early morning flights to Auckland and a night flight back south, had the added advantage that many coming from Auckland would need to stay a night, Ms Lockhart said.

The service is expected to be offered five return flights a week, but Ms Lockhart said that could increase if there was a strong business case for more.

Invercargill Airport Limited general manager Nigel Finnerty confirmed at least 13 full-time and 16 part-time jobs have been created at the airport because of the new flights.

Air New Zealand's chief executive Christopher Luxon said in a statement that the Southland community had been asking for a direct service for some time, and this answers the region's aspirations for growth.

As well as supporting Southland's tourism ambitions, he said an extra 500 tonnes of goods a year will be able to be flown from Invercargill to Auckland.

The company's head of tourism and regional affairs, Reuben Levermore, said the flights are the culmination of a lot of work.

"There has already been a really enthusiastic response to the jet service from the Southland community and a lot of work has gone on to get the airport ready for our jet aircraft, to market the service, and to provide services and amenities for visitors to Invercargill," he said.

Ann Lockhart said the first flight to Invercargill would receive a Southland welcome when it landed at about 9.35pm.
