Bitte beachten Sie, dass Mitglieder des Schulvereins den Newsletter direkt per E-Mail erhalten sollten. Wenn Sie ein Mitglied sind und es noch nicht erhalten haben bzw. Sie gerne Mitglied werden möchten, wenden Sie sich bitte an board@gess.sg.

am Anfang eines jeden Schuljahres finden die Elternabende und Wahlen der Elternvertreter und Buddies statt. Dazu haben wir letzten Mittwoch die Einladung an alle Eltern versandt, die Sie auch noch einmal hier finden.

Nehmen Sie auch die Gelegenheit wahr, an den ‚Meet & Greet‘-Veranstaltungen in der Kantine, jeweils vor oder nach einem Treffen mit der Klasse ihres Kindes, teilzunehmen. Sie haben dort die Möglichkeit die Schulleitung zu treffen und sich mit den anderen Eltern Ihrer Klasse auszutauschen. Bitte achten Sie darauf, dass für manche Klassenstufen zusätzlich Informationsveranstaltungen stattfinden, z. B. in den Klassenstufen 10, 11 und 12 zu den anstehenden Abschlüssen.

Schedule

Letzte Woche lud das Buddies Komitee zu ihrer Auftaktveranstaltung für das neue Schuljahr ein und traf sich mit den neuen Eltern an der GESS. Die Mitglieder der Schulleitung sind der Einladung ebenfalls gerne gefolgt, haben sehr viele Fragen der Eltern dankend aufgenommen und werden weiterhin daran arbeiten, Sie mit wichtigen Informationen zu versorgen.

Aus gegebenem Anlass möchten wir Sie zudem dringend darauf hinweisen, dass wir Sie im Notfall erreichen können müssen. Sollten Sie sich als Eltern nicht in Singapur aufhalten, so müssen Sie der Schule über ein Formular bescheid geben, wer als Guardian die Verantwortung für die Kinder während der Abwesenheit der Eltern übernimmt.

Unter den Anträgen finden Sie im Parent Portal unter anderem auch das Formular für GastschülerInnen. Wenn Ihr Sohn oder Ihre Tochter einen Gast mit in die Schule bringen möchte, muss die Schule darüber vorher rechtzeitig informiert werden, sodass wir den Besuch organisieren und u. a. den/die KlassenlehrerIn informieren können. Außerdem muss auch der/die GastschülerIn eine Schuluniform tragen.

Es gibt noch ein weiteres Thema, das ich gleich zu Beginn des Schuljahres ansprechen möchte. Uns ist aufgefallen, dass sich manche SchülerInnen nicht sehr vorbildlich benehmen, wenn sie mit dem Bus Nummer 973 von der Hillview MRT Station zum GESS Campus und zurück fahren. Der Bus kann besonders während der Stoßzeiten am Morgen sehr voll werden. Die folgenden Regeln müssen von den SchülerInnen stets beachtet werden:

• Lass andere Passagiere erst aussteigen, bevor du in den Bus oder die U-Bahn einsteigst.
• Es darf nicht gedrängelt werden, um in den Bus zu kommen. Andere Passagiere dürfen nicht angerempelt werden.
• Sei rücksichtsvoll gegenüber anderen Passagieren. Es gibt keinen Grund den kompletten Bus oder die U-Bahn zu unterhalten.
• Wenn möglich, gehe zur Mitte des Busses durch, um Platz für einsteigende Fahrgäste zu machen.
• Bezahle deine Fahrt, indem du die MRT Karte beim Einsteigen an das dafür vorgesehene Gerät hältst.

Wir alle repräsentieren die GESS, besonders unsere SchülerInnen, die das GESS Logo sichtbar auf Ihrer Uniform tragen. Bitte erinnern Sie Ihre Kinder an die oben aufgeführten Regeln, sowie auch wir diese im Unterricht noch einmal wiederholen werden.

Vor den Sommerferien haben viele von Ihnen die Internationale Sommer Party an der GESS gefeiert. Ein buntes Fest mit vielen Aktivitäten, Spaß und Spiel für Junge und Junggebliebene. Wie jedes Jahr hat das Eventsteam, mit Unterstützung der Eltern, das Fest organisiert. Leider verliert das Eventsteam jedes Jahr durch Wegzug, Arbeitsbeginn usw. einige Mitglieder. Aus diesem Grund brauchen wir dringend neue helfende Hände, um den anstehenden „Weihnachtsmarkt“ zu planen und durchzuführen.

Haben Sie Spaß am Organisieren, Lachen, Reden, ... dann melden Sie sich bitte unter eventsteam@gess.sg. Wir freuen uns immer über neue Gesichter, egal ob es die großen Aufgaben oder die kleinen Hilfen sind, jeder ist bei uns willkommen! Das Eventsteam freut sich auf viele neue Mitglieder!

Der GESS Fund ist der Fundraising Arm der Schule. Er unterstützt GESS um das schulische Erlebnis unserer Kinder über das Klassenzimmer hinaus, zusätzlich zu der bereits sehr guten Qualität der Ausbildung, zu gewährleisten; durch besondere Ausstattungselemente, bessere technologische Ausrüstung und innovative Zusatzprogramme.

Seit seiner Anerkennung als gemeinnützige Organisation im Jahr 2014 hat der GESS Fund über eine Million Dollar an Zuwendungen eingeworben, welche die Realisierung des Design & Technology Studios, des Cooking Labs, oder die vor kurzem erfolgte Anschaffung eines Konzertflügels, um nur einige Pojekte zu nennen, ermöglicht hat. Der Fund förderte ausserdem mehrmals die Teilnahme unserer Schüler an den Southeast Asian Games, sowie den seit 15 Jahren stattfindenden Volkswagen Cup, das Fussballereignis des Jahres. Um die gesteckten Ziele zu erreichen und um GESS an der Spitze der internationalen Bildungseinrichtungen in Singapur zu halten, benötigt der GESS Fund die philanthropische Unterstüzung von Einzelnen und von Unternehmen.
Der Fokus in 2019/20 wird weiterhin auf der Einwerbung von Mitteln für unserere Schwerpunktbereiche MINT, Kunst & Kultur und Sport liegen. Faszinierende grosse und kleine Projekte sind in der Planung für das neue akademische Jahr. Es war toll so viele von euch an der Welcome & CCA Fair zu treffen. Wir hoffen, dass nach dem anfänglichen Chaos der ersten Wochen, nun das normal Leben Einzug gehalten hat. Der erste “Casual Day” des neuen Schuljahres findet am kommenden Freitag (6.9.2019) statt.

Die Einnahmen werden der Schülervertretung zur Finanzierung von Kosten im laufenden Schuljahr zur Verfügung gestellt. Schüler, die nicht in Uniform zur Schule kommen, müssen mindestens 2 Dollar bezahlen, die von den Klassensprechern eingesammelt werden. Wir bedanken uns bereits im Voraus für diese Spenden.

Unsere Schülerinnen und Schüler der Jahrgangsstufe 6 (2018-19) in der Europäischen Sektion organisierten im Juni einen Kuchenverkauf an der SDN 004 TELUK SEBONG TELUK SEBONG Schule auf Bintan. Die Hälfte des Geldes wurde bereits überwiesen und die Schule kaufte damit Ventilatoren und Wasserpumpen. Der Rest wird in zwei Wochen gesendet werden, sodass sie Drucker und Tischtennisplatten kaufen können. Der Schule auf Bintan fehlt es auch an vernünftigen Toiletten und Sportanlagen, daher hoffen wir, sie in diesem Schuljahr weiter unterstützen zu können. Die jetztigen sechsten Klassen werden die gleiche Schule in der Enrichment Woche besuchen, sodass wir weiterhin von dem Austausch der Kulturen und Werte profitieren können.

Das Förderzentrum der Sekundarstufe Euro-Sec wird dieses Schuljahr sein Angebot zeitlich ausweiten. Unsere neuen Zeiten sind:

• Montag, Dienstag, Mittwoch und Donnerstag von 15-16 Uhr 
• Jeden Tag in der Mittagspause (13.30-14.00 Uhr) 

Das Angebot richtet sich an alle Euro-Sec Schüler der Klassen 6 – 10 und beginnt ab Montag, den 2. September. Das Euro-Sec Förderzentrum befindet sich in Raum E312/E311. Sollte Ihr Kind bei den Hausaufgaben, der Vorbereitung von Tests oder generellen organisatorischen Dingen Hilfe benötigen, dann ermuntern Sie es bitte, zu uns zu kommen. Mittwoch 18. September; 10:00 - 11:30 Uhr; B501 & B502 (Multipurpose Räume)

Die Lion City Tour kommt zur GESS! Am Dienstag, den 18. September, werden uns Vertreter von ca. 65 Universitäten für unsere Lion City Messe besuchen. Schülerinnen und Schüler der Jahrgagsstufen 11 und 12 werden an der Messe teilnehmen; Eltern sind ebenfalls eingeladen vorbeizuschauen, um die Universitätsvertreter zu treffen. Die Messe wird den Schülerinnen und Schülern sowie den Eltern die Möglichkeit geben, mehr über die Standorte der Universitäten, angebotene Bachelorstudiengänge und Zugangsvoraussetzungen zu erfahren. Dadurch, dass viele Universitäten aus aller Welt vertreten sein werden, erhalten Sie auch die Möglichkeit, mit Universitätsvertretern von Universitäten an Standorten zu sprechen, die Sie bisher noch gar nicht für die akademische Laufbahn Ihres Kindes in Erwägung gezogen haben.

Die Veranstaltung wird im 5. Stock im Block B von 10.00 - 11.30 Uhr stattfinden. Sie ist Teil einer Reihe von Universitätsmessen, die an internationalen Schulen überall in Singapur als Teil der Lion City Tour 2019 stattfinden; in diesem Jahr sind 13 Schulen an der Tour beteiligt. Wir hoffen, Sie auf der Messe zu sehen!

In der ersten Woche treffen die Schüler ihre CCA & LEP-Instruktoren/Trainer im Forum. Kindergarten- und Vorschulkinder werden zu ihrem Treffpunkt begleitet.

Unsere GESS-Sportteams waren in den ersten beiden Schulwochen schon unglaublich fleißig und haben sich intensiv auf ACSIS-Saison 1 vorbereitet. In allen Sportarten werden die Mannschaften unsere Schule in den höchsten Spielklassen vertreten, die ersten Spiele stehen dabei kommende Woche auf dem Programm. Wir suchen noch Jungen für unser U19-Volleyballteam (Klassen 9-12). Die Mannschaft trainiert diese Saison jeden Dienstag und Freitag (16:35 Uhr) und haben zusätzlich Ligaspiele in ACSIS-Division 1. It is a pleasure to announce the next Shadow Yoga Workshop with Peter Ujvari from Melbourne. Whether you are an experienced practitioner, a beginner or anywhere in between, during this workshop you will be taught a fixed sequence in order to establish a regular and effective home practice. Lesson times are in the mornings and evenings, respectively, with plenty of time in-between to relax and recover. 

Celebrating German-Singaporean connections and friendship, Beethoven im Garten returns to the Singapore Botanic Gardens after its resounding inaugural success in September 2018 that drew over 6,000 audience members. Once again, Maestro Kahchun Wong will lead principal musicians of the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra, this time an expanded group of sixteen, and the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory Orchestra in a performance of Beethoven’s 6th Symphony, also known as the Pastoral Symphony. Trained in both Singapore at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music and at Berlin’s Hanns Eisler Academy of Music, and a protégé of the great Kurt Masur, Wong’s rapid rise to the top ranks of the world orchestral league since his win at the Gustav Mahler Competition in 2016 and his lastminute debut and appointment to the Nuremberg Symphony as its Chief Conductor in 2017, has gained him instant international attention.

Audiences are welcomed to bring their picnic baskets and mats to enjoy the lush surroundings of the Singapore Botanic Gardens. Admission is free.

The Board of Governors would like to extend a warm welcome and wish you a great start to the new Academic Year. We have published the first issue of the Association Newsletter for the AY 2019/20. Please note, that Members of the School Association should receive the newsletter directly by email. If you are a Member and have not received it or if you would like to become a Member, please contact board@gess.sg.

At the beginning of every school year, we organise the Parent Evenings & Elections of Parent Representatives and Buddies. You should have received the invitation for this event last week via E-Mail. Take the opportunity to also attend the Meet & Greet events in the canteen before or after your child’s class session to meet the school management as well as other parents from your child’s class. Please take note of additional information sessions for some of the year groups, e.g. in Grades 10, 11 and 12, during which you will receive further information about the final exams.

I am looking forward to meeting you at GESS from 9 – 11 September.

Schedule

The Buddies Committee invited new parents to their kick-off meeting for the beginning of the year, held at GESS last week. Members of the school management followed the invitation as well and attended both meetings and appreciated the parents’ questions. We will continue to improve the information flow between the school and parents.

Due to some unfortunate emergencies/medical issues concerning our students in the first 2 weeks of school, we have to remind you that we need to be able to contact you in case of emergency. Should parents be absent from Singapore, the school needs to be informed via a form and given the contact details of a guardian who takes the responsibility for the children during the absence.

The list of forms on the Parents Portal also contains a form for guest students. If your son or daughter would like to bring a friend to school, the school needs to be informed at least three weeks in advance, so that we can organise the visit and inform the homeroom teacher. Furthermore, the guest student needs to wear a school uniform during his/her visit at GESS.

There is another issue I would like to address right at the beginning of the academic year. We noticed that some students are misbehaving when traveling with the bus 973 from Hillview MRT station to the GESS Campus and back.

The bus can get very full, especially in the morning during peak-hours. Please follow these simple rules when traveling with public transport:

• Let other passengers alight before getting on the bus or train.
• Do not push other passengers to squeeze into the bus or train.
• Be considerate of other passengers – there is no need to entertain the whole bus or train.
• When possible, please move to the rear to allow other passengers to board.
• Tap your card to pay for your ride when getting on the bus.

We are all ambassadors of the school, especially our students who visibly represent the school by wearing the GESS uniform. Please remind your children of the above-mentioned rules, and we will address this in class again.

Just before the summer holidays, many of you participated in the International Summer Party at GESS. A vibrant event with lots of activities, fun and games for the young and the young at heart. Every year, the Events Team jointly organises this event with parents. Unfortunately, and this has been the case for many years, we have lost some members of the Events Team due to relocation. This is why we are urgently looking for new helping hands to plan and execute the ‘Christmas Bazaar’.

Do you like organising social events, interacting with the community and bringing enjoyment to others? Then please write to eventsteam@gess.sg. We are always happy to see new faces and have helping hands be it for big responsibilities or smaller tasks. Everyone is welcome and the Events Team is looking forward to many new members!

The GESS Fund is the fundraising arm of the school. It works alongside GESS to enhance our children’s experience above and beyond the classroom and on top of the already very high quality education by providing for extra equipment, better technology and innovative co-curricular programmes and more.

Registered as a charity in 2014, the GESS Fund has raised more than one million dollars to date, which allowed for numerous projects to be realised, like the Design & Technology Studio, the Cooking Lab, or the recent purchase of a Grand Piano, to name just a few. It also allowed multiple times for our students to participate in the Southeast Asian Games and to host the Volkswagen Cup, the soccer event of the year, for 15 years in a row! To achieve the set goals and to keep GESS at the pinnacle of international education in Singapore, the GESS Fund depends entirely on the philanthropic support from individuals and corporates. The focus in 2019/20 will be to continue collecting funds for our priority areas STEM, Arts & Culture and Sports. Fascinating big and small projects are in the pipeline for the new academic year! It was great to meet so many of you at the Welcome & CCA Fair. We do hope that after the busyness of the first few weeks of school, life is getting back to normal and would like to remind you, that we are always looking for active members, who want to be part of the Community Club. The first casual day at GESS will be on 6 September 2019.

The proceeds will go towards the Student Council funds to allow the Student Council to operate throughout the school year and cover costs. Participating students (i.e. students not wearing the school uniform on the day) have to donate a minimum of 2 SGD. Donations will be collected by the class representatives. We thank you in advance for the contribution.

Registration for next academic year 2019/2020 can be made in our Parent Portal under “Enrolment for Lernwerkstatt”. Please find information regarding our “Lernwerkstatt” there as well. Our 2018-19 Grade 6 European Section students raised money by organising a bake sale for the school at Bintan SDN 004 TELUK SEBONG TELUK SEBONG during the month of June. Half of the money collected was sent to the school and they have bought and installed fans and water pumps. The rest of the money will be sent to them in another two weeks to buy printers and table tennis tables. The school at Bintan is also lacking in proper toilet and sport facilities and we hope to help them in the current academic year. The current Grade 6 students will also be visiting the same school in Bintan during the Enrichment Week to enjoy an exchange of culture and values.

The Secondary Learning Support Department, European Section will be offering an extension to their homework support program. Our new times are as follows:

• Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 3 - 4 pm 
• Everyday during lunch from 1.30 - 2 pm

This service is open to all students in the Euro-Sec Grades 6 – 10 beginning Monday, 2 September. The Euro-Sec Student Support Services is located in E312/E311. If your child is interested in receiving support with homework, assignments, and/or general organisation, please encourage his/her attendance. The Lion City Tour is coming to GESS! On Wednesday 18 September, representatives from approximately 65 universities will be visiting us for our Lion City University Fair. Students from Grades 11 and 12 will attend the fair, and parents are also invited to come along and meet university staff at the event. The fair will give students and parents the chance to find out more about university locations, undergraduate courses on offer and entry requirements. With universities attending from a wide range of countries around the world, it will also provide an opportunity to talk with representatives from universities situated in places that you may not have considered up to this point for your child’s future academic studies.

The event will be held on the fifth floor of B block, starting at 10.00am and running through to 11.30am. It is part of a series of university fairs being held at international schools across the island as part of the Lion City Tour 2019, with 13 schools involved in this year’s tour. We hope to see you at the fair!

CCA & LEP online enrolment is now closed.

• CCA for Secondary School will start in the week of 2nd September.
• CCA for Primary School will start in the week of 9th September, and LEP will start on Wednesday, 11 September.
• CCA for Pre-School will start in the week of 16th September.
In the first week of CCA& LEP, all participants are to meet their instructors and coaches at the Forum at 2.50 pm. Kindergarten and Pre-Primary students will be escorted by their teachers.

 Our GESS sports teams have been incredibly busy these first two school weeks in order to get ready for ACSIS Season 1. The first games will kick off next week, with our teams representing GESS in the highest divisions across all sports. Check the GESS Sports Website for regular updates and support our athletes in their quest for medals and trophies.

We are still looking for high school boys (Gr. 9-12) to join our 19U Volleyball team. They practice every Tuesday and Friday this season (4.35 pm) and have additional league games in ACSIS Division 1. If you are a keen volleyball player and eager to represent the GESS colours in ACSIS, please get in touch with our Sports Coordinator (jan.kandziora@gess.sg) or directly with the CCA Team (cca@gess.sg). It is a pleasure to announce the next Shadow Yoga Workshop with Peter Ujvari from Melbourne. Whether you are an experienced practitioner, a beginner or anywhere in between, during this workshop you will be taught a fixed sequence in order to establish a regular and effective home practice. Lesson times are in the mornings and evenings, respectively, with plenty of time in-between to relax and recover. 

Celebrating German-Singaporean connections and friendship, Beethoven im Garten returns to the Singapore Botanic Gardens after its resounding inaugural success in September 2018 that drew over 6,000 audience members. Once again, Maestro Kahchun Wong will lead principal musicians of the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra, this time an expanded group of sixteen, and the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory Orchestra in a performance of Beethoven’s 6th Symphony, also known as the Pastoral Symphony. Trained in both Singapore at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music and at Berlin’s Hanns Eisler Academy of Music, and a protégé of the great Kurt Masur, Wong’s rapid rise to the top ranks of the world orchestral league since his win at the Gustav Mahler Competition in 2016 and his lastminute debut and appointment to the Nuremberg Symphony as its Chief Conductor in 2017, has gained him instant international attention.

Audiences are welcomed to bring their picnic baskets and mats to enjoy the lush surroundings of the Singapore Botanic Gardens. Admission is free.
