CEO VIDEO NEWSLETTER

30 AUGUST 2019

Dear colleagues and partners,

I hope everyone has had a happy and productive week. I can't believe it's Friday already and that means it's time to send another of my weekly video newsletters to you. These aim to give you some insight into my work and what I've been up to in the past week.

As always, if you have any thoughts or feedback on the topics I cover in this week's edition, I really would love to hear from you. You can reach me on my social channels below or via email here.

CROWDFUNDING PLATFORM
First of all, on Tuesday evening, we officially launched our EIT Health Crowdfunding Platform and its first campaign for Surge-on Medical.

The launch took place at an event called "Scaling and Driving Digital Health Innovation in Europe to the Next Level", held at Berlin’s Charité Museum of Medical History, before an audience of representatives from politics, the healthcare industry, venture-capital firms, media and start-up companies. The first campaign is seeking to raise as much as €5 million for Surge-on Medical through sales of shares in the start-up.

More details about the launch, the platform and Surge-on Medical in the video and here

STUDY ON AI HESITANCY
Secondly, I want to draw your attention to some very interesting research led by the University of Westminster in London - a study on what they call AI hesitancy. It comes at a crucial time following the £250 million funding announcement for AI in the NHS.

The study entitled “Acceptability of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-led chatbot services in healthcare: A mixed-method study” aimed to explore the public’s willingness to engage with AI-led health chatbots. It found that a large proportion of the public is reluctant to use AI-led services for their healthcare, particularly for more serious illnesses. However, the newly announced NHS funding does not consider public acceptance of this technology and therefore, the researchers warn that increased focus on AI in the NHS could actually increase health inequalities and may be detrimental to public health in the UK.

JP'S SUCCESS STORY - WEEK 7
Finally, I want to continue my new section of this newsletter entitled "JP's Success Story".

Each week, I'll take an example of what success means for EIT Health - something which can take several shapes. I'll explain the example and then provide info on why this is a success for EIT Health.

This week, I take a look at the EIT Health Investor Network. So as you may know, through this network we match investors with start-ups looking for funding and have a good process for doing this.  An example of this support in action is through the raising of €1.8 million by the French start-up Wefight.
