SNO Wins The American Prize
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – AUGUST 30, 2019
(BALTIMORE, MD) Local chamber orchestra Symphony Number One has been named the 2019 Grand Prize Winner of The American Prize in Orchestral Performance. The American Prize recognized the Baltimore group for its 2017-2018 season which included 11 concerts, a fourth album, 3 major world premieres, a hip-hop collaboration, the music of Dan Deacon, 20 total new compositions, and a performance at TEDxMidAtlantic 2017. Symphony Number One has previously received recognition by Baltimore Magazine, the Warnock Foundation, and BaltimoreCorps. This marks the first significant national recognition for the independent music ensemble dedicated to commissioning and performing substantial musical works by emerging composers. COLLABORATION WITH MORGAN STATE UNIVERSITY
September 7-8, 2019: Symphony Number One recently announced its 5th season, BRIDGES, featuring music by Morgan State University professor and composer James Lee III, as well as music by Kirsten Broberg and Baltimore composer and Voices Rise co-founder Douglas Buchanan. These living composers will see their music juxtaposed with 20th century composers Aaron Copland, Arnold Schoenberg, and George Walker. Music Director Jordan Randall Smith conducts.
