On the Midway With the Carnival Game Investigators Out to Protect Your Summer Fun

A retired police officer in Dearborn, Michigan, Margittay has found a second act as a crusader, and his cause is to root out, expose, and rid the world of shifty carnival games. He can’t stand when fraud stands in the way of fun. So in the place of fun, when he visits a fair, he collects evidence.

1.  Disney’s opening of Star Wars land drew crowds to Florida. Now they face Hurricane Dorian.

Tourists flocked to Central Florida on Thursday for an intergalactic experience: the grand opening of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Walt Disney World. But they may be in for some atmospheric action as well.  “It couldn’t come at a worse time,” says Dennis Speigel, president of consulting firm International Theme Park Services. “It’s the perfect storm, literally: It’s Galaxy’s Edge, it’s the holiday, and it’s just horrible.”

2.  4 targets in the trade war’s latest fallout

Coats, merry-go-rounds and 100-year-old antiques imported from China are about to get a bit more expensive.  Dennis Speigel, president of International Theme Park Services, said the U.S. actually doesn’t import a whole lot of these attractions — it’s the other way around. However, China is trying to build this industry, and Speigel estimates that by 2030, China could be the largest leisure market on the planet.

3.  From Disney's Star Wars Galaxy's Edge to a museum in Dundee: Time magazine reveals the world's greatest places for 2019

It has come up with 100 destinations from around the world that it believes are breaking new ground, leading industry trends and offering visitors extraordinary experiences.  This year's list includes Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge at Disneyland in California, the new V&A Museum in Dundee, a sprawling resort in the mountains of Bhutan and a park in Dubai inspired by the Quran.

4.  No gender division at new Six Flags theme park in Saudi Arabia

There will be no gender division at Saudi Arabia's new Six Flags theme park in Qiddiya when it opens in 2023, according to a senior official connected to the project.  Mike Reininger, CEO of Qiddiya Investment Company (QIC), the wholly owned subsidiary of Saudi Arabia's HRH Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman-led Public Investment Fund (PIF), said the theme park would appeal to a “broad spectrum” of audiences.

5.  GEN Malaysia 2Q profit up, theme park opening delayed

Casino operator Genting Malaysia Bhd says its second-quarter net profit rose 5.3 percent from the prior-year period, on revenue that increased 7.4 percent in year-on-year terms. Such profit for the reporting period was nearly MYR416.5 million (US$98.7 million), with revenue just above MYR2.60 billion, the company told Bursa Malaysia on Thursday.

6.  DOLLED UP Dolly Parton’s Dollywood theme park is loved by kids and now it’s had a £30million expansion with lots of new rides

DOLLY Parton's famous theme park, Dollywood, has had a £30 million expansion called Wildwood Grove.  The new six-acre attraction has 11 experiences, including six brand new rides.

7.  Sim Leisure Group to open theme park at Paradigm Mall in Petaling Jaya

Penang-based theme park developer Sim Leisure Group is to open an indoor recreational centre at Paradigm Mall in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia.    Sim Leisure has already started the construction of the 35,000sqft indoor recreational centre which it will operate as a tenant for up to 12 years. 

8.  Six Flags Magic Mountain Reveals Plans For Fright Fest, Holiday In The Park Expansion

Six Flags Magic Mountain recently unveiled 2020 plans for the theme park, including a new coaster, new regions in the park and the biggest-ever expansion of the park’s two signature annual events, Fright Fest in the fall and Holiday in the Park during the winter season.

9.  What is Disney Genie?

Though last week's D23 Expo was chock full of announcements about the future of Epcot, Avengers Campus, and more, one relatively low-key announcement that may have flow over some Disney fans' heads was that of Disney Genie, which is a new tool that Disney will be rolling out at some point next year to help guests "have the perfect hassle-free vacation". But what exactly is this new tool? Let's look at what Disney has (and has not) confirmed about their newest vacation planning assistant!

10.  Walt Disney World Is Almost Ready To Launch A Major Improvement To Its Theme Park Transportation

Just this morning, I was debating a fellow Disney Parks nerd (staff writer Dirk Libbey) about Walt Disney World’s dominance over the Anaheim-based Disneyland. Dirk’s a California native, and is naturally inclined to side with his familiar West Coast stomping ground. As an East Coast kid, I’ll defend Orlando’s sprawling vacation destination over the significantly smaller Cali spot all day and all night.
 

11.  Construction worker killed in accident at Disneyland

Authorities say the man was working around a trench at a backstage area at 3:19 a.m. Thursday and was hit by a large steel plate after a piece of equipment accidentally struck a cross beam and knocked it down.

12.  Dave Storm is the new managing director of the amusement park Slagharen

Dave Storm takes over the position of general manager at the leisure and holiday park Slagharen. He succeeds Wouter Pops, who resigned after only four months in office.

13.  Kennywood Hosts 10th Annual Coasting For Kids Events

WEST MIFFLIN, Pa. (KDKA)– With another summer coming to an end, Kennywood will continue to celebrate Labor Day weekend by hosting the Coasting for Kids event.

14.  Son remembers his mother, Katie Dean of Joyland

LUBBOCK, Texas — The family of Joyland founder Katherine “Katie” Webb Dean is remembering her legacy and the impact she left behind on the Lubbock community after 100 years of life.

15.  Food on a Stick Festival comes to Cliff’s Amusement Park

At this 5th annual festival, you’ll be able to taste culinary creations from seven to eight different food trucks all of which will be served on a stick. Kids and adults will also be able to enjoy all of the classic amusement rides and games that Cliff’s in addition to a few new additions to the park this year.

16.  Great America seeking 500 professional ghosts, zombies and monsters for Halloween Haunt

The Santa Clara amusement park is holding its 12th annual fall event, the Halloween Haunt, beginning September 27, during which it will host "8 haunted mazes, 2 scare zones, 3 live entertainment offerings, hundreds of frightening monsters and Great America's most popular thrill rides."

17.  Lots of exciting fall fun happening at Holiday World

Courtney Budelman visited Holiday World a couple of weeks ago as part of our Indiana Great Escape. Holiday World is a giant amusement park that is a great summer and fall destination! The park is open for Happy Halloween weekends from September 21 - October 27, 2019. There is a lot of fun for the family happening just in time for Halloween! Don’t worry, it is not too spooky.

18.  Canada's Wonderland is hosting huge Oktoberfest celebrations next month

On September 14 and 15, and 21 and 22, the amusement park just north of Toronto will be serving up German-themed food and beverage specials, along with traditional festival bands, and daily activities.

19.  Attraction in French amusement park adapted after complaints about racism

The French amusement park Nigloland has decided to adapt an old attraction after complaints about racism. A few days ago, a visitor on social media wrote that a scene in the Africa Cruise boat trip could not be done. That Twitter message was shared thousands of times in a short time. 

20.  Knott's Scary Farm adds more laughs to the screams for 2019

Two new mazes and a show highlight the line-up for Knott's Scary Farm's 47th year this fall.  Knott's Berry Farm last night hosted its annual reveal show for the theme park industry's original Halloween event, unveiling the two mazes that will debut this year:

20.  Inspiring Women Behind Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge Join Forces For D23 Expo Panel

Full of immersive experiences, tantalizing tastes and exciting encounters, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge has been thrilling guests at Disneyland Resort since it welcomed its first guests in May and now Walt Disney World Resort has opened its doors to travelers from all over the galaxy! During D23 Expo, attendees had the chance to hear from a few of the inspiring women who played a major role in making the unique lands possible. 

1.  Museum of Illusions’ Upside Down House: Immersive fun or stupid Instagram stunt? 

Narcissism is here to stay. For proof, look no further than those immersive “art exhibitions,” colorful backdrops made for social-media selfies.  The Museum of Ice Cream, which took up residence in Los Angeles for eight months in 2017 and now resides permanently in San Francisco, has been valued at $200 million by investors, according to the Wall Street Journal. The business is planning new venues internationally as well as branded foods and other products. There’s even talk of a theme park.

2.  Topgolf expands into central Europe

Topgolf Entertainment Group is continuing its global expansion by entering into a franchise agreement with Switzerland-based Greenreb. The deal will see the opening of Topgolf venues in Germany, Switzerland, Italy and Austria.

3.  An immersive Dr. Seuss Experience is launching in Toronto before touring the US

The Dr. Seuss Experience has been confirmed for Toronto’s Square One shopping centre. The retailtainment attraction will be an interactive and immersive depiction of the world of Dr. Seuss.

4.  Sim Leisure Group inks agreement, set to bring ESCAPE Challenge to Paradigm Mall Petaling Jaya by 2019 year-end school holiday

Pursuant to the agreement, Sim Leisure has started the construction of the 35,000 square feet indoor recreational centre. The Group will design, install and operate the centre under the tenancy agreement for a period of up to 12 years. The Group expects completion and official launch of the recreational centre by end November 2019, before the peak year-end school holiday season.

5.  Dave & Buster’s set to open at Greenwich Place; begins hiring more than 200 workers

The new Dave & Buster’s at Greenwich Place is set to open in late September, and general manager Suzanne Greb says Wichitans are so excited it’s actually overwhelming.  “I feel like a celebrity almost,” she says.  Greb, who has been with the Dallas-based company for eight years, moved here from California.

7.  WONDER VALLEY INTRODUCES ROPES COURSE ON STEROIDS

A reconstructed ropes course is lifting a Fresno County resort to new heights this summer.  Wonder Valley Ranch Resort revealed to the press this week what it had opened over the summer — a brand new circuit of poles, bridges and pulleys for their team-building attraction.  At over five stories tall, the course features a continuous network of seven “elements,” connecting them all back to a roughly 55-foot pole.

8.  Han claims work on Kaohsiung's 'Love Ferris Wheel' to start next year

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) -- Itinerant Kaohsiung Mayor and full-time presidential candidate Han Kuo-yu (韓國瑜) announced today (Aug. 30) that construction on the so-called "Love Ferris Wheel" should begin next year.  When Han was running for mayor of Kaohsiung last year, he proposed the construction of a "Love Ferris Wheel" (愛情摩天輪) on the city's Love River, arousing intense debate among all walks of life. At a press conference in Kaohsiung today, Han said that if everything runs smoothly, construction on the Ferris wheel will probably begin next year.

9.  Dinosaurs galore to be found at new Arundel mini golf course

Raptor Falls mini golf, located on Route 1 in Arundel, had its grand opening on Tuesday, Aug. 27, after months of anticipation and excitement.  The dinosaur-themed course, which also serves ice cream, was packed with children and families this week, and owners Bree and Cliff Gajtkowski said that it has been a huge success so far.

10.  The Charles M. Schulz Museum: exploring the artist and the craft behind Peanuts

The Charles M. Schulz Museum in Santa Rosa, California, is home to the largest collection of Peanuts strips in the world. The museum is dedicated to an exploration of the artist’s life and work.

11.  World’s Toughest Job Is Open at the Berlin Jewish Museum

Sept. 1 is the deadline to apply for the post of director of the Berlin Jewish Museum. It could be the toughest job in the world: It involves maneuvering between the interests of the German government, the country’s Jewish community, international Jewish organizations, the Israeli government and diverse groups within academia. The previous director, Peter Schaefer, who resigned under pressure on June 14, failed to find the right balance.

12.  Fly over the Pacific in Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum's New Flight Simulators

Always wanted to fly your own plane but not sure if you have what it takes for flight school? Well, no worries—you can still take to the skies on the new Fighter Ace 360 Flight Simulators at Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum.

1.  Tampa’s Adventure Island to close Key West Rapids, open new ride

Busch Gardens has announced that a new attraction is coming to Adventure Island, its adjacent water park in Tampa. The ride will replace Key West Rapids, which visitors can ride one last time on Oct. 1.

2.  Giant new £25 million surfing lagoon and outdoor pool planned near Coleshill

A new lagoon complete with a surf school which could create hundreds of new jobs is to be built in landlocked Birmingham.  Audacious plans for the new development have been unveiled by London-based Emerge Surf which is hoping to win back from planning chiefs for its £25 million project.

3.  Center Parcs ready for short breaks rise after reporting profits surge

Bosses at Center Parcs believe they are in a prime position to capitalise on a rise in short family breaks as the company posted a substantial rise in profit for the last financial year.  The leisure giant heavily invested in its flagship Sherwood Forest holiday village recently with a new adventure ride at its Sub Tropical Swimming Paradise, while its first Ireland destination, Longford Forest, opened in July.

4.  Chincoteague campground, water park sold for $15 million

A Chincoteague waterpark and campground have been sold for more than $15 million.  According to a deed recorded Aug. 13 in Accomack County, the Maui Jack's Waterpark property on Maddox Circle was sold for $4.1 million by Island Waterpark LLC to Sun Maui Jack's Waterpark LLC, a Southfield, Michigan, limited liability company.

5.  Group of teens saves girl from drowning at California water park

A group of kids in California are being hailed as heroes for helping to save a young girl from drowning at a water park.  The group was on a summer trip to Wild Water Adventures in Clovis last weekend when they spotted the young girl struggling to stay above the water.

6.  Daytona Lagoon Announces 2nd Annual First Responder Day Event

PRNewswire/ -- Daytona Lagoon, Daytona Beach's Premier Waterpark and Family Entertainment Center, today announced the 2nd Annual First Responder Day event, which will honor those who serve and protect the public with free admission to the park on September 14th and 15th.

1.  Louisville Zoo could be run by a private group in the future. Here's what to know

Louisville is looking for help running its zoo, as rainy days have kept visitors away and increased city costs in recent years. A new management system, like a public-private partnership, could mean less erratic city costs from year to year — an attractive prospect, particularly given Louisville's budget constraints.

2.  Taronga Zoo unveils luxury accommodation with Wildlife Retreat at Taronga

Taronga Zoo has released images and information about its new luxury eco-retreat, Wildlife Retreat at Taronga. The accommodation overlooks Sydney Harbour and offers a unique sleepover experience.

3.  Milwaukee County Zoo Adding 3rd Elephant

The Milwaukee County Zoo will add a third African elephant to its herd.  Belle is being transferred from the Riverbanks Zoo and Garden in South Carolina to join long-time residents Ruth and Brittany. The addition fills the zoo's requirement by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' new guidelines to hold a minimum of three elephants. It also gives Belle a place to retire. 

4.  Otter facility finished

After a few short months of construction, the Oregon Coast Aquarium opened its new otter holding facility on Friday, Aug. 23, and introduced Nuka, Oswald and Schuster to their new space.  The facility is just the first step in the larger goal of building a marine rehabilitation center, but it already allows the aquarium to do more for stranded and sick sea otters — and it could lead to a chance for the public to meet a sea otter up close and personal.

5.  Wildlands continues to grow: more animals, but attraction disappears

Wildlands Adventure Zoo Emmen says goodbye to an attraction. The Terra Explorer simulator has been definitively closed, a spokeswoman confirms to Looopings. At the same time, the animal park is working on renovating different accommodations and adding a lot of new animal species. 

6.  Serengeti Park 2019 New with guided tours "Big Five Express" and "Ranger Express"

The Serengeti Park offers its visitors two new guided thematic tours through the safari area. In addition to encounters with numerous animals such as elephants, cheetahs and antelopes, guests have the opportunity to feed giraffes.

7.  Could the trade war with China cost the U.S. its pandas?

The Smithsonian National Zoo received its first giant pandas from Beijing in 1972, and the species has been one of the zoo's biggest draws ever since. But with President Trump's trade war with China spiraling, could the U.S. be at risk of losing them?

8.  Hurricane Dorian: Palm Beach Zoo closes, animal parks prepare for the storm

Storm updates on the Palm Beach Zoo, Busch Wildlife Sanctuary, Lion Country Safari and other animal parks  A bird can do many wonderful things. Reading a weather report is not one of them.  Which is why the staff at Loxahatchee’s Lion County Safari are making sure their primates and birds get to stay put for as long as possible in preparation for Hurricane Dorian, which is set to start affecting Florida as early as Saturday.

9.  Crews taking down Kiddie Park rides for move to San Antonio Zoo

The big move is underway. Crews were seen Thursday taking down rides at the Kiddie Park near downtown in anticipation of the park's relocation to the San Antonio Zoo.  Zoo officials announced in April that they would partner with the owners of the Kiddie Park to move the attraction near the front gates of the zoo.

10.  Malfunction closes state aquarium; species relocation underway

A filtration malfunction at the state aquarium in Boothbay Harbor shut down the facility Thursday, forcing an unplanned relocation of multiple marine life species.  The state Department of Marine Resources, which operates the aquarium on McKown Point Road, announced around 9:30 a.m. that the building would be closed until further notice due to an unforeseen maintenance issue.

1.  Hasbro Thinks "Peppa Pig" Is Worth as Much as "Star Wars"

Hasbro (NASDAQ:HAS) is bringing home the bacon, announcing it is acquiring Peppa Pig owner Entertainment One (OTC:ENTMF) for $4 billion in cash. It may seem as if the toy company is using Monopoly money, because that's the same price Disney (NYSE: DIS) paid for Stars Wars' Lucasfilm Studios.

2.  Wacky State Fair Foods You Didn't Know Existed

You never know what kind of foods you're going to come across at the state fair.  Nowadays there's deep-fried everything, from Oreo cookies to even beer, and inspired vendors are only getting more ambitious as they look to one-up one another.
