NIHR Case study: Chipping away at portion sizes
NIHR has highlighted SPHR funded research which saw researchers working with a fish and chip wholesaler to encourage takeaways to offer smaller portions to customers in a bid to combat obesity. The wholesaler subsequently developed smaller packaging that is now in use in more than 250 shops across the country. It is available here.
Publication: A qualitative study of health promotion in academy schools in England.
Schools are an important setting for health promotion. In England, around one third of publicly funded schools have become independent of local authorities since 2000 and are now academies, run by an academy trust. The aim of this research was to examine attitudes towards health promotion held by academy trust leaders and senior staff. It is available via BMC Public Health.
BNF Research Spotlight 2019 - the 'Takeaway Masterclass'
The British Nutrition Foundation has included SPHR funded research into the Takeaway Masterclass in 2019's first issue of Research Spotlight which gives focus to recently published papers of nutrition science interest. It is available here.
Congratulations

Blog: Reflections on the NIHR Tenth Infrastructure Doctoral Research Training Camp
Vicky Carlisle (SPHR PhD student, University of Bristol) reflects on her experience representing the School this year at the NIHR's Tenth Infrastructure Doctoral Research Training Camp. 2019's theme was 'Attracting Further Research Funding'. Please read here.
Reminder: Prevention Green Paper - consultation
On 22nd July 2019, the Prevention Green Paper covering important proposals aimed at tackling smoking, drinking and poor diets was published. Consultation is open until 14th October 2019. There is much in here of relevance to our SPHR research programmes, particularly in Chapter 3 which includes mental health, early life and creating healthy places etc. as well as other references relevant to our cross cutting themes. The section on research (P62) on ‘co-production with practice’ is also relevant to our new recent investment for capacity building ‘inspire the next generation of researchers, attracting the best people into prevention research; combining academic research with practice as a career pathway’. If you have a view on whether or not the School should respond and/or if you would like to volunteer to join a small group to draft a response, please contact Susan Bowett (susan.bowett@ncl.ac.uk).
Course: Driving social change and improving health and wellbeing: An introduction to systems resilience
The concept of resilience is typically presented as a property of individuals, communities, organizations or service sectors such as the health system. Resilience is understood to be the “capacity to endure, adapt and generate new ways of thinking and functioning” in the context of change, uncertainty or adversity. As evidence of the negative impacts of global recession on social and health inequalities accumulates, health policy attention has turned to the question of how the resilience of communities bearing the brunt of these inequalities can be enhanced. As a consequence, there is a growing call to focus on a systems resilience approach. The course will introduce the concept of systems resilience that emphasises releasing the capacities of all the actors, institutions, objects and processes within a neighbourhood system. Participants will reflect what a systems approach might offer to health and wellbeing, individually and collectively. At the end of the course participants will be better equipped to become an agent for change in population health. The course will be held 23-25 September, Llatzeret de Mao, Menorca, Spain. Funding Opportunities
NIHR Incentive Awards 2019
The Department of Health and Social Care (DH&SC) in England funds an annual scheme whereby small incentive payments are offered to Cochrane Review Groups (CRGs) for preparing key new or updated Cochrane reviews by agreed dates. Over the history of the scheme, around 300 awards have been made. In 2019, the scheme has been expanded to include topics that fall under the remit of Campbell Coordinating Groups. The Department recognises that these awards are insufficient to meet the full costs of conducting reviews. They are intended to be applied at the discretion of Co-ordinating Editors in ways that will facilitate and possibly accelerate activity that is already planned or underway. Deadline for submission is 1pm 27 September 2019. More information here.
