My Elizabethan Commonplace Book: “Today the pilgrims assembled in a hall to see marvels & hear wise words. There is a great spirit of generosity among them. They share food, clothing, & lodging. Was introduced to a player called Christopher Marlowe.”

“Many yards of fine fabric, lace, & trims have been been delivered to Master Roydon’s house. Madame Francoise, that fearsome French woman, will not divulge why. We suspect new clothes for his new wife. Wind & rain.” #DebsCommonplaceBook #ADOWS2

“Bought a brace of fine pheasants. Two boys almost knocked me down chasing each other on Water Lane. Talked with a Portuguese merchant who has been to Africa. Mistress Roydon was out with her husband. A curious pair.” #DebsCommonplaceBook #ADOWS2

“Rose early. Went to Master Prior for currant buns then to St Paul’s to avoid the crowds. Purchased more books than I had expected, and though my purse is empty my mind will be filled with marvels and wonders.” #DebsCommonplaceBook #ADOWS2

“Visited with Mistress Roydon and her husband in their lodgings. They have many well-appointed rooms, and two servants who are French. I was introduced to the Earl of Northumberland, a noble man with a gentle soul.”

“The Roydons have taken that lost and fatherless boy into their household. He is in sturdy shoes & neat clothes and he looks a presentable & promising young man now. Mistress Roydon dotes on him. Master Roydon, too.”
#DebsCommonplaceBook #ADOWS2

“Such a strange sight was seen on Water Lane. A woman—in Italian drawers! The gossips say she was fresh off a boat from Venice. Some say she is Master Roydon’s sister. I am off to the tavern to learn more.”
#DebsCommonplaceBook #ADOWS2

“Winter is coming. I purchased tuft mockadoo for a skirt & a cunning fabric made to resemble a kind of ermine at Master John Lewis the Mercer. I will use it in the window seat on cold days. The weather is changeable.” #DebsCommonplaceBook #ADOWS2

You are more than your to do list.

We are encouraged to be relentlessly busy, always striving, measuring and tracking everything from water intake to hours of exercise. When is the last time you did something for yourself, something that wasn’t an action item, something that fed your soul? When was the last time you breathed deep and grounded yourself in the present? This needn’t be saved for a holiday.

Robert Poynton encourages us to pause—and be.  I am loving his book! #thoughtfortheday

“I was about the city on this fine day and saw that uncanny man Father Hubbard, though to what parish he belongs I know not. The children have made a rhyme about him. He is unusual tall and has many waifs around him.” #DebsCommonplaceBook #ADOWS2
