September 2019

Dear ETP4HPC Members and Partners,

The summer months have been a very busy time for European HPC! The first EuroHPC calls for Research and Innovation projects were published on July 25. ETP4HPC, and specifically our representatives at the EuroHPC RIAG, were instrumental in defining the contents of those calls.

We are aware that the new EuroHPC processes raise many questions for all of you (and for our team as well). In particular, information on funding by the EuroHPC participating states is still lacking for many countries. We have voiced our concern to the EuroHPC JU on this critical gap.

To help you, we have compiled a short factsheet with pointers to existing information. If you are looking for partners for potential projects, don’t hesitate to use our Networking form or contact our Office for assistance. I wish all submitting teams a lot of a success in getting their proposals ready - and approved!

The 4th edition of our Strategic Research Agenda (SRA 4), which is currently being prepared by our experts with your collective contributions, will help shape EuroHPC calls beyond 2019. As we speak, our SRA 4 is taking its final shape. After publishing our blueprint back in April, the SRA 4 Working Groups have developed their chapters. We have addressed the intersections between the Working Groups and the Research Clusters – the cross-domain topics that require work in multiple Working Groups. Our core SRA team has been working hard to deliver the general parts of the SRA. The final workshop with an aim to review the document is taking place in early December.

I am looking forward to a busy September and Q4. Thank you for your support to date and if there is anything we can do to help you, please let us know.

Jean-Pierre Panziera
ETP4HPC Chairman

The EuroHPC JU calls for proposals 1) Towards Extreme Scale Technologies and Applications and 2) Innovating and Widening the HPC use and skills base opened on 25 July. They will close respectively on 14 January 2020 and 14 November 2019. Here are some pointers to information on the calls. [+]
EXDCI-2 call for HPC spin-off support extended

CALL CLOSES 17 SEPTEMBER (instead of 6 September). Transitioning from the outcome of an HPC Research and Innovation project to a (successful) market product is often an issue. Not enough time, not enough funding... To bridge this gap, EXDCI-2 conducts a pilot action to create “project spin-offs” that could start during the lifetime of an R&I project and survive its end. [+]
ETP4HPC welcomes industrial users of HPC

For the past year, our Industrial Users Working Group has been working hard on how to address industrial companies using HPC for their operations, with the objective to attract more industrial members in our association. If you know industrial companies that would be interested to take an active part in shaping the European HPC research strategy, let us know. [+]
