Dear Neighbor,

Tomorrow Women & Children First Bookstore is celebrating their 40th anniversary with a block party at Farragut and Clark from 11am to 5pm. The event will feature music, children's activities, feminist crafts, and more, with a special toast at 4:30pm. Women & Children First has been an anchor in Andersonville for decades, serving as so much more than just a bookstore to many people in our community. In recent years, the team has put a focus on bringing author readings and book signings to the community. Next month they are hosting a sold-out event featuring Justice Sonia Sotomayor at Senn High School, and next week local author Celia Perez is hosting a launch event for her new book, Strange Birds. To learn more about upcoming events at Women & Children First, click here. For more information on tomorrow's block party, including an entertainment line-up, click here. I want to congratulate Ann, Linda, Sarah, and Lynn, and all those who have worked to make Women & Children First a great bookstore in our community.

Earlier this week our community celebrated another milestone with Loyola University's Sister Jean's 100th birthday celebration. Sister Jean became an international phenomenon when the Loyola Ramblers men's basketball team entered the NCAA Final Four tournament, but she has always been a larger-than-life figure on Loyola's campus. Please join me in wishing Sister Jean a happy 100th birthday, and many more to come.

I joined ASCO (Association of Sheridan Condo Owners) in celebrating the opening of Malibu Market in the Captain's Walk of the Malibu & Malibu East buildings on Sheridan Road.
The new market features a deli, grocery, coffee, and liquor store. If you live on Sheridan Road, please stop by and welcome the new owners to the community.

Next week Mayor Lightfoot will host a televised State of the City address, followed by a series of Budget Town Halls around the city. Click here for more information on the town halls. I'll be communicating with you further about the budget after Labor Day. Additionally, I expect to have an update about the Andersonville Water Main Project and related tree issues after Labor Day.

Next week is the last week before Chicago Public Schools students head back to school. Please join us for our annual 48th Ward Back to School Celebration on Wednesday, August 28, 5-7pm, on the Senn High School Lawn, 5900 N. Glenwood. We'll have live music, school supply giveaways, pizza, games, facepainting, and more! Edgewater Pet Mayor winner Pax the Goat will also make a special appearance at the event. Click here to RSVP on Facebook and to invite your friends and neighbors.

The final Argyle Night Market of 2019 is next Thursday, August 29, 5-9pm, on Argyle between Sheridan and Kenmore. As is our tradition, the final market of the year will be dedicated to the memory of John "Vietnam" Nguyen, and will feature performances from the Chinese Mutual Aid Society youth lion dance team, Kuumba Lynx breakdance and footwork performers, and political hip hop act Rebel Diaz. We will also recognize the late Ron Salazar, who passed away earlier this year and was instrumental in the creation of the Argyle Night Market. I hope you will join us for one last summer celebration next week. Click here for more information.

This week my office was notified that David Bradley has passed away. David was known to many people from the Andersonville community, and was frequently at Balmoral and Clark. My office worked closely over the years with care providers to try to get David the assistance and resources he needed. He lived with many challenges that led him to be homeless. I want to thank the many neighbors and business owners who were kind to David through his challenges. I would also like to thank the officers from the 20th Police District who spent a lot of time checking on David and working to connect him with resources. David was like others in our community who experience homelessness, who need our support and assistance. It is important that we remember that they are our neighbors and that we should do all we can to provide them the help that they need to live their lives.

Enjoy your weekend, shop local, and be safe and responsible when enjoying the lakefront.

Sincerely,

Harry Osterman
Alderman, 48th Ward

Clark Street Infrastructure Updates

Last week, south of Ridge on Clark St., "paint-and-post" bumpouts were installed at many intersections. This, along with the new dashed bike lane through the heart of Andersonville, is an effort to make the street more comfortable and safe for pedestrians and cyclists. The clearer delineation of traffic lanes, bike lanes, and pedestrian crossings also make the street more organized for drivers, which allows for a safer experience for them as well. This project is largely modeled on a similar project on Milwaukee Ave. in Bucktown. Using paint and small bollards or posts, this design is flexible and allows our office and CDOT to observe conditions and make modifications as necessary.

The double striped bumpouts at crosswalks, along with the protective bollards, allow pedestrians to safely step a little further into the intersection before crossing the street. This allows for better sightlines for pedestrians and motorists alike. The dashed bike lane that was installed a few weeks ago better delineates on the road where cyclists should ride, protecting them from riding too close to the "door zone" and too close into the lane of traffic. It also helps motor vehicles stay closer to the center lane, allowing for a safe distance between them and cyclists. This project is a work in progress. Alderman Vasquez and I are working with the Andersonville Chamber of Commerce and SSA to identify ways to add some color to brighten the bumpouts and soften the look. We hope that these efforts will continue to make Andersonville a pedestrian friendly community as a way to support the thriving independent business community.
