 Welcome to our September Newsletter

Kia Ora, Mālō ē lelei, Talofa, Nǐ hǎo, and a big hello from the NZ School Nurse team. September provides an opportunity to celebrate some of the many languages that our students speak. Celebration of our languages empowers and encourages Pacific and Asian communities  to hold on to their language.

The chosen theme for Maori language week is 'Kia Kaha te Reo Māori’. ‘Kia Kaha’ is well understood in New Zealand English with its meaning of ‘be strong’. We often talk about languages as if they are people – talking about wellbeing, language, health, strength and revitalisation. So when we say ‘Kia Kaha te Reo Māori’ we’re saying  - ‘Let’s make the Māori language strong'.

Language can inspire or alienate, cherish or insult. It is increasingly recognized that communication between clinicians and patients is one of the most important aspects of the healthcare relationship and yet often it can be challenging. Thankfully we now have access to google translate, apps and translators that can assist. Download our official Pacific language resource with Samoan, Cook Islands Maori, Tongan, Tuvaluan, Niuean, Fijian and Tokelauan here. We also love the Kupu app (give it a go with your students- they love it!) and the Aki Hauora app for increasing your Te Reo and ensuring we make the Maori language strong.

Our September Fact - Did you know?

Ninety per cent of throat cancer cases are now being attributed to HPV, which is most commonly picked up from oral sex.
That's up from 62 per cent in the 1990s. Researchers are urging New Zealanders to get immunised against  human papillomavirus (HPV) in a bid to significantly reduce the country's alarming throat cancer rates.

Massey University PhD graduate Rebecca Lucas-Roxburghstudy highlights how much of a problem HPV cancers are in New Zealand. There are as many HPV positive oropharyngeal [throat] cancer cases now, as cervical cancers. Read more here. Further information for students and staff on recognising the warning signs of gynaecological cancer and things you can do to lower your risk can be found here

The following resources are available for you to promote the HPV campaign in your school.
