Your PCC writes...

I start this week’s newsletter on a very sombre note.

Last week, we heard the tragic news of PC Andrew Harper, who was killed whilst responding to reports of a burglary in Sulhamstead, Berkshire.

I am deeply shocked and appalled by the death of PC Harper who, like thousands of other police officers across the UK, was working to protect us.

This horrific crime is a powerful reminder of the dangers our police officers face day in, day out, in the name of keeping us safe.

I send my deepest condolences to the friends, family and colleagues of PC Harper at this extremely difficult time.

Out and about with Gwent Police

I spent part of this week out and about with officers from various Gwent Police teams.

As Police and Crime Commissioner, I spend a lot of time discussing policing at a national policy level.

It is therefore important that I take time out every so often to meet with officers on the front line and hear first-hand the challenges they face at a local level. This also informs future discussions I have with the Chief Constable.

This visit included a ride along with the Area Support Unit, and time with the cybercrime and modern day slavery teams.

Thank you to everyone I met for such a warm welcome, I learnt something from each and every one of you.

Summer Engagement

It was a busy weekend for my office, with events in both Caerphilly and Monmouthshire.

On Saturday, I joined the rural crime team at the Bedwelty Agricultural Show, whereas Sunday saw me team up with the Gwent Police Cyber CSO and Connect Gwent for the Caldicot 999 Day.

These were both fantastic family events where my team and I had the opportunity to speak to hundreds of people, informing them of our work and giving out crime prevention freebies.

This weekend I will be taking part in the Cardiff Pride march and attending the Caerphilly Fire Station Open Day. For more information on these, please visit my website.

Positive Futures Tournament

My office joined the team from Positive Futures for a 5-aside football tournament in Caldicot this week.

The tournament saw teams from Positive Futures projects across Monmouthshire, Newport and Torfaen compete to be crowned tournament champions.

It was a day of high quality sport, culminating in victory for Newport Sanctuary (over 16’s winners) and Abergavenny Fridays (under 16’s winners).

A huge congratulations to them and well done to everyone who took part.
