Replacements Special: Every Song Ranked!

SOMEWHERE IN THE SUBURBS, North Virginia, August 23 Popular music podcast Rockin' the Suburbs announced this morning that they have ranked every original and cover song by The Replacements, an influential American rock band formed in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1979.

Considered a pioneer of alternative and indie rock, The Replacements released 134 original and 41 cover songs, according to the Suburbs Pod website.

Suburbs Pod co-founder Jim Lenahan said that listeners helped compile and write the rankings, which were released to the public this morning.

"I honestly don't know what the hell we were thinking in undertaking this project," Lenahan said when reached by phone last night, when word of the ranking project began to spread among fans. "I'm tired. Leave me alone."

"The rankings speak for themselves," Suburbs Pod co-host Patrick Foster said in a prepared statement. "I'm really bad at math. Ranking anything is difficult for me."

The rankings for original songs are available here. Cover versions are ranked here.

An analysis of the rankings reveal that, in addition to Foster and Lenahan, the following members of the Suburbs Pod community contributed to the rankings: Thomas Nord, Justin Steiner, Will Pfeifer, Scott Parks, Nick Scalera, James Petrillo, Erik Didriksen, Harris King, B.J. Bonin, Mike Wagner, Kevin Goff, Craig Rosen, Mark Neese, Phil Ingrassia, Bud Verge and Mike Snider.

The Week That Was: Ranking the Replacements

Welp, we finally went and did it. Thanks to everyone who tallied up their top 10 Replacements songs to help us determine the top 15. And big thanks and love to Phil Ingrassia, who joined us for each of this week's countdown episodes.

Want to know what's #1? Well you gotta go listen!

On Deck: New Music, Steven J. Athanas and Talking Tiki Tunes

While the world was firmly in the grip of Replacements madness, we got back to work (since you need to listen everyday and all). Here's what we cooked up:

Monday August 26 - New music with Steven Routledge. Scotland calling.
Tuesday August 27 - Jim interviews Steven J. Athanas -  artist, musician and Toledo legend. You will love getting to know him.
Wednesday August 28 - Part two of Jim's interview with Steven. Discover the the mysteries of playing in a wedding band.
Thursday August 29 - Mike Kohli, Editor-in-Chief of NYSMusic and all-around great guy, joins us to talk about artists from his home state and a very cool music festival he's involved with.
Friday August 30 - A new voice joins the Suburbs Pod community. This one was so important we had to make a trip to Greg Wilson's Tiki Bar (it's a dirty job, but someone's gotta do it). Listen Friday to find out why.

Wayback Machine: Tiki Time

Get ready for Friday's discussion of all things Tiki. Hop in the Delorean and crank it to 88 and revisit that time we visited Greg Wilson's Tiki Bar for the first time. We talked summer jams.

What We're Listening To:

Gimmie New Albums: New Releases August 23

Head down to Pier Platters for some new vinyl for your collection. And pick up a new milk crate while you're at it. Your old one is full of records!

Jay Som – Anak Ko (Polyvinyl)
What started as a bedroom-recording project for Melina Duterte has grown into a fuller, richer sound on her third album. It’s dream pop with some crunchy guitar touches, evoking a ‘90s alternative sound yet still feeling of its millennial time. Press. Play. Now.

Redd Kross – Beyond the Door (Merge)
This Zelig-like band has popped up in various scenes throughout the arc of American alternative rock. Early L.A. punk – check. Power pop – they fit there too. ‘80s college rock – sure. The ‘90s alt scene – yes, they road that wave. And 40 years later, they’re still going strong, with hooky guitar rock that may no longer be part of any scene but sounds like it should be.

The Rubinoos – From Home (Yep Roc)
Chuck Prophet (Friend of Suburbs Pod) produced this new album by this power pop outfit, whose history goes back nearly 50 years. The classic lineup is back together and they even recorded at San Francisco’s Hyde Street Studios, where they had cut their first single for Beserkley Records.

Raphael Saadiq – Jimmy Lee (Columbia)
The 53-year-old soul singer confronts his brother’s (losing) battles with drug addiction and other family tragedies. It took him a long time to process these emotions musically. The least you could do is give it a listen.

Sheer Mag – A Distant Call (Wilsuns)
This Philadelphia band’s second full LP puts you in the mind of ‘70s FM radio, with riffy jams and not an ounce of pretention. In some alternate universe, they pack stadiums.

Taylor Swift – Lover (Republic)
You know how it sucks to be famous? No? Well, let Taylor Swift tell you about it.
