Pastor's Devotional...
August 29, 2019
“Unshakeable Faith” is undergirded by hanging out with other faithful folks. “Do not be misled: bad company corrupts good character.” I Corinthians 15:33. We’ve all learned from experience that you become like the people with whom you associate.
Once again, neuroscience (the study of how the brain works) has rediscovered not just the veracity of Scriptural guidelines but also how those guidelines are consistent with how we function biologically. Sanford professor and author, Kelly McGonigal (The Willpower Instinct) explains the brain has “mirror neurons” that literally cause us unconsciously to mirror others’ physical actions, mannerisms and even their attitudes, moods.
So, want to be more positive, have a more upbeat attitude? Avoid the downers and associate more with the joyful. Want to be a better parent, spouse, boss, team player, have a healthier diet, exercise more, be more goal oriented, have deeper faith? Hang with those types of folks.
When a truth is repeated several times in Scripture, we can value it as a general principle for a positive life. Hebrews 13:7 “Remember your leaders who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith.”
I Corinthians 4:16 “Therefore I urge you to imitate me.”
I Corinthians 11:1 “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.”
II Thessalonians 3:9 “We did this… in order to offer ourselves as a model for you to imitate.”
Prayer: Holy Spirit, draw me to those lives that are strong where I am weak. May I align myself with those aligned to my Savior. In His Name, Amen.
