September 2019 Mondays

Hello fellow dancer,

The latest newsletter from the Totnes Dance Collective in which I also answer a couple of comments left in the Monday evening feedback box thus making for a longer newsletter than usual.

Mondays dates in September as on the TDC website
  • 26th Aug - Music-Led Dance with Robert Moore
  • 2nd Sept - Soul Motion with Leela Fisk
  • 9th Sept - Conscious Dance with Jo Hardy
  • 16th Sept - Movement Medicine with Rosie Perks
  • 23rd - Soul Motion with Michael Molin-Skelton - Guest slot
  • 30th - 5 Rhythms with David Ellis

September's Guest
Michael Molin-Skelton, a faculty teacher on the Soul Motion team, returns to the UK to lead a weekend workshop called 'Moving Stories' [link here]. We are pleased that he has again accepted our offer to be one of our 2019 guest teachers to hold an evening for Monday night dancers.
If I remember right this will be Michael's fourth guest holding of a Monday evening — I really like his approach to dance and what he packs into just a few hours.

Other local dance events offered in September - wow!
I've just updated the list of other events offered by those associated with the Collective: these are on the Collective's website under: "Other dance events in September" — the link appears on the right-hand side of each web page. There is SO much to choose from! And that's only what I know of through my connections with the Collective. What a smorgasbord of movement activity available in this area!

Lift-sharing reminder.
As some of these things on offer are outside of Totnes, if you can and are willing to offer lifts to other dancers within this dance community, please let us all know.
As well as a Totnes Dance Collective Facebook page, there is also a Fb group — you have to ask to join the group even if you've liked our Fb page. This group could be used for organising lift-sharing.
Or do you know of some other way of doing this avoiding the Facebook platform?
Do let us know.

Feedback
Have you noticed, on the big table in the entrance on Monday evenings, as well as flyers, there is a box for feedback. Each week it is there so that you can, anonymously if you wish, write your comment that you want us to be aware of and put it into the box.

Two comments left in August I want to address: plastic cups and the floor:
Plastic cups: someone wrote "saddened" by us using "single use plastic cups".
Each week these plastic cups are rinsed and left to dry in our storage area. After numerous months of use they are replaced with new cups: the old ones disposed of in plastic recycling.
If you don't like the sound of this then please come with your own water bottle.
A water cooler is soon to be installed so I have been told. Probably partially powered by the electricity generated by the Civic Hall's solar panels!

"Feet Black! does the floor get cleaned?"
Was this left by someone new-ish to Monday evening dances?
The short answer: Each Monday, during the day, the floor is washed clean; we are the first people to use it.
The longer answer: Over many years we have let the Totnes Town Council (who are behind the hire of the Civic Hall) know that we would like the floor to be cleaner due to us dancing barefoot.
Earlier this year (possible as a result of the petition we handed in as the state was so bad last year) the floor was sanded and re-sealed. The company that did this recommended the use of their own cleaning product. The Town Council considered this to be an excessive cost. However, cleaning left a sticky residue; our further complaints about this have the Town Council currently trialling the recommended cleaning product.
I think the current cleaning company could still do better, however, the thing to be aware of is that our needs are very different to the majority of the other, more typical (i.e. shoe-shod), hirers of the hall.

Thank you for reading this far! I added the feedback as we have almost 400 people now on our email list and many may come only occasionally to dance. We do take note of feedback and change what we can.
We are working also on a simple 'etiquette' statement to help clarify boundaries and behaviour between dancers as this area has been bumpy at times.
If you have feedback that you want us to hear please either email me or leave a comment in the box!

Finally, a "little" discussion issue of a more personal (yet, also global) interest. I want to find good ways to off-set the carbon emissions of those teachers and leaders that have to fly. Do you have suggestions?

Thank you for your support of our Monday evening dances.

Robert
