Midnight races and our journey to the Arctic Circle
Fun in the Midnight Sun! Fairbanks, Dalton Highway, & the Arctic Circle
Hey everyone! Go North Episode 11 is now available to watch on YouTube.
In this episode we head to Fairbanks to celebrate the Summer Solstice at the Midnight Sun Festival - Alaska's largest 1-day event that draws over 30,000 visitors! We do the Midnight Sun Run, a fun and costumed 10k through the neighborhoods of Fairbanks, who turn out in force to support (and party with) the race participants. We then head further north on the famous Dalton Highway to find the Arctic Circle and experience 24-hour sunshine.
Many of you might have heard about the wildfires that have plagued Alaska this year. We have been safely away from them, but have been in and have had to drive through extremely dense smoke that has been somewhat impacting our travel schedule. Usually August is a very wet and cold time of year - so we've heard - but we've been experiencing quite the opposite in hot and dry weather. Finger crossed that the rain comes soon!
Where are we? What's the plan?
We have been in the Kenai Peninsula for most of August, and we will be in Alaska for a few more weeks yet. Our plan involves leaving Alaska mid-September (because of weather and things really start closing down after Labor Day), traveling through Canada and re-entering the Lower 48 mid-late October.
