Carried Bells is a process-based work, in which sounds and images of a series of ringing church bells are recorded, from the city of Berlin, in a repeating daily task of walking and carrying. These sounds and images are then brought together in a central installation, which grows by one bell each day over the course of the presentation of the work.

Carried Bells harvests traces from the sounds of the city — exploring acoustic phenomena, social history, and the potential of public space — and assembles an accumulating outcome that allows these individual recordings to combine and overlap in unpredictable ways. The work aims to bring the sounds of the bells of the city out of the backgrounds of our attention, to recontextualise them, and to re-imagine them.

Hošek Contemporary, the unique Berlin gallery housed on a repurposed boat in the river Spree, will present Carried Bells for the first time. The work will be presented every day from Saturday, 5. October to Friday, 25. October, 2019, and will grow and develop over the course of its presentation, with the addition of sounds and images of one bell each day. There will be a vernissage event on Saturday, 5. October, from 7pm, and a finissage event on Friday, 25. October, from 7pm.

Each day adds one further recording to the work — so the vernissage will have a single bell recording, and the finissage will have all twenty bells. Come along any day in between to hear that day’s stage of the accumulation of the work. And make sure to also take a look at the progression of the work online, day by day — there will be regular updates on Instagram and Mastodon.
