Fearrington Farmers' Market
Tuesdays, 4 - 6 pm
April through November

Bring on the fall flavors!

Can you believe how beautiful the weather was this weekend?  (Okay, okay, it rained, but... rain is good for the crops, and it was significantly cooler.)  I'm always excited about the first hints of autumn -- crisp air, leaves changing colors, pumpkins and apples and --

I'm probably getting ahead of myself; it's still August.  But the flavors of fall are starting to arrive at market, in the form of various pumpkins and squashes, the first of the fall greens, and shiitake mushrooms!

Shiitakes have a richer, meatier texture and flavor than those boring old button mushrooms at the grocery store.  Never used them before?  Cindy from Eco Farm has a bunch of recipe ideas, including these:

Shiitake Mushroom Gravy:  Melt butter or olive oil in pot on low heat. Add sliced garlic, then sliced shiitakes, and stir occasionally. Add oregano, salt, and pepper, and cook for fifteen minutes. Blend everything in blender or food processor and serve over your favorite meats and vegetables.

Shiitake Mushroom Pizza:  Remove and discard stem from large mushroom. Place 'shroom on oiled baking pan. On top of 'shroom, place grated mozzarella or Parmesan cheese and any of the following, sliced: garlic, onions, tomato, green or red peppers. Bake at 350 degrees, or broil, until cheese is melted over 'shroom.

You can also use diced, cooked shiitakes in place of ground meat in recipes like stuffed peppers or lasagna.  For more ideas (including a recipe for shiitake bacon!) check out this article from Chowhound.

When the bell rings at the start of market this week, Michael, Olive and I will be on the road heading north for our annual get away.  We leave the farm in good hands -- Taij, Victoria, and Caitlyn will be seeing that the hens are well cared for, the greenhouse is watered and the field crops aren't overrun with weeds.  To keep things a little easier for them, they will skip this week's Fearrington Market but will be back the following week with all the goodies you are accustomed to getting at our stand.  Please do not think that we are through for the season... just taking a little break.  Look for them next week!

with gratitude,

Sour Bakery is a wild yeast leavened breads and pastry bakery. We currently use a shared commercial kitchen in Durham, but we are hoping to open a brick and mortar in Alamance County (where we live). All of our breads and pastries use a 10 year old culture that we cultivated while living in Seattle, Washington. While wild yeast is more commonly associated with Sourdough, our breads range from sour to mild, depending on the type of loaf. You can find out a little more about Sour Bakery via Instagram and Facebook! Please do come by to try a sample of our offerings, and maybe take a loaf to break with friends!

We will have: Classic Sour, Salted Rosemary, Olive Garlic Rosemary, Artichoke Garlic Parmesan, Cinnamon Raisin, and Sun-Dried Tomato Garlic. We will also have croissants, chocolate croissants, pretzels, Jalapeño Cheddar Pretzels, almond Apple Pear twice baked croissants and crackers!

Sweet Flowers and Fruits will have lots of peppers for you at market this week!  You'll be able to choose from an assortment of red, yellow, orange, and green peppers for both cooking and eating raw -- maybe with some roasted eggplant dip?  We'll be bringing the traditional black beauty, the smaller, pretty purple dancer and also some fairy tale eggplant.  The okra is going wild, so we'll have plenty of that along with onions, garlic, and maybe some green beans.  For a special treat, pick up a paw paw!  They won't be around long.  In the flower department we'll have mixed bouquets and some bunches of pink lisianthus for you.  Hope to see you Tuesday!

The following vendors also plan to be at market this week:

Gramma D
Grand Hope Farm
Hillsborough Cheese Company
Kalawi Farm
Katherine's Garden
Pomegranate Kitchen
Valley View Farm

Spread the Local Food Love!

Visit Beth and Lily at the Take & Eat Food Pantry donation station!  They collect and buy fresh food at the market for folks in need and deliver to the pantry by 6:30 every Tuesday.

For more information, visit www.takeandeatpantry.org.
Mushrooms love the cool, wet weather of late summer and early fall.  Shiitakes are typically grown on natural oak logs, which soak up moisture and feed the mushrooms.
