HELLO PADDLERS!
With the weather still so warm and wonderful, it seems too soon to head indoors for monthly meetings, but autumn is just around the corner!  We hope everyone has had a beautiful time on the water this summer, sharing our exceptional coastline with friends and family.  As we gather again, we want to hear your stories, share your photos.  Please feel free to contact newsletter@nanaimopaddlers.org to submit tales of your adventures for everyone to appreciate.

NEXT MONTLY MEETING
Wednesday, September 4th, Beban Park, Room 2, 7 pm.
"The ecology and population trends of seals and sea lions in BC" with Dr. Strahan Tucker, DFO Marine Mammal Scientist at Pacific Biological Station.

Seals and sea lions are some of the most familiar marine mammals in our waters, yet they are also some of the most misunderstood. The Pinniped Research Group at the Pacific Biological Station DFO undertakes large-scale population abundance and diet assessments for seals and sea lions in BC to understand where pinnipeds fit into the big picture as both predators and prey. This talk will look at the biology and ecology of pinnipeds, with an overview of  trends and updates in population status, and our efforts at diet estimation through scat analysis (hard-part identification and DNA-metabarcoding) with the goal of understanding how key prey are partitioned both within and between pinniped species.

UPCOMING EVENTS

‘Save the Date’  END OF SEASON SPLASH AND PICNIC
Saturday, Sept 14 at Fuller Lake, Chemainus 11-3ish. More details to come via Meetup!

NEWCASTLE ISLAND SHORELINE CLEANUP
Join us
Saturday, October 5, for our annual shoreline clean up. This is our second try. Let's hope the weather cooperates this time.
The plans are to gather garbage on the shoreline around Newcastle Island.

We do have one skiff but it would be helpful to have a couple of canoes to also shuttle garbage. We also need a couple of trucks to transfer the garbage to the Transfer Station. Please email me at
plmcphie536@gmail.com if you can provide a canoe or a truck.

Participants will be divided into groups as they arrive at the launch site. Each participant should bring a couple of garbage bags, gloves and a container for glass. Shoes suitable for shoreline scrambling should be worn. If you have a VHF radio and an operating license, please bring it.

Bring a picnic lunch to eat on Newcastle Island after the clean up.

There is pay parking at the boat launch. Some members may wish to launch elsewhere and paddle to Brechin for 10:00 A.M. to be organized into groups.

OUR ANNIVERSARY!
It may sound early, but our club turns 40 in September, 2020.  It would be nice to have a BIG celebration, including stories from original members, some of whom are still active in Nanaimo Paddlers.  If you would like to help make this happen, contact treasurer@nanaimopaddlers.org.

HOSTING COMMITTEE
So far this year a total of 23 hosts have organized 63 club paddles and have gotten 442 participants out on the water.  Many thanks to all those hosts!

We are about half way through the summer season now and some of us are winding down from our longer trips / journeys along the coast.  With the shoulder season approaching many of the active paddlers are starting to focus on day trips closer to home, and hopefully they will provide paddling opportunities for other club members by hosting events.

If anyone has any questions about hosting, the hosting handbook is available on the Nanaimo Paddlers website (www.nanaimopaddlers.org) under the Trips tab, or directly at: http://www.nanaimopaddlers.org/uploads/1/8/0/1/18018567/hosting_handbook_complete_document_may_2_19.pdf

If clarification is needed, or to discuss any specific issues that have come up on past paddles, please contact the Hosting Committee directly:

Gordon Allen:    geo_ga@yahoo.com

Louise Thompson:     lvthompson@me.com

For anyone interested in becoming a host the process is relatively simple.  To qualify to become a host a paddler’s skill level has to be “Advanced Beginner.”  This means that they have acquired a few basic skills as defined in the self assessment table, but most importantly that they can perform a self and an assisted rescue.  Someone in the Hosting Committee or club executive should be familiar with a candidate’s skill level.  If this is not already the case, we need to organize a paddle together to make that assessment.  Other than that they should read through the Hosting Handbook and be familiar with hosting responsibilities.

Once it is clear that a host candidate is qualified, all that is required is that a Meetup administrator gives that person posting privileges.

We look forward to seeing you on the water.  If you are interested in becoming a host, and setting up your own trips for Club members, please contact Gord Allen at hosting@nanaimopaddlers.org or the address above.

SKILLS COMMITTEE
We are in the process of booking pool sessions in both Nanaimo and Ladysmith for the fall.  These sessions will be open for all members for their own practicing. An instructor will be present for guidance.

IMPORTANT NEWS - INSURANCE UPDATE 2019
Recently, the Executive undertook a comprehensive review of the club’s Commercial General Liability (CGL) insurance policy. Participants, and those who host Club paddles, understandably want to know that the club has liability insurance which will respond if an incident occurs and a claim is made.

Effective August 1, 2019, the Club obtained a policy of insurance from Markel Insurance which provides $3,000,000 in coverage for both participants and hosts on club trips.  If an incident occurs and negligence is established, the policy will pay defence costs and any settlement or judgement up to the limits of the policy.

The coverage provided is best understood by reference to a few scenarios.

If, for example, a participant (P 1)was injured by the negligence of another participant (P2), and sued that person (P 2),  the policy would pay to defend P 2, and would pay any settlement or judgement for which P 2 was liable.  If P 1 also claimed against the host, and/or other participants, and perhaps the club itself, the policy would pay to defend all of those persons.

The second scenario is one where a participant on a club trip (P 3), negligently injured someone who was not a member of the club and who was not a participant on the trip.  If that outsider brought a claim against P3, or other participants on the paddle, or the club itself, the insurer would pay the costs to defend those persons and would pay any settlement or judgement owing.

No insurance policy provides coverage for injuries or damages which are caused intentionally.  Our policy is no different.  For the sake of an example, albeit unlikely, assume a member assaulted another participant on a club paddle; in that case the policy would not respond.  No defence would be provided and any settlement or judgement would be the sole responsibility of the wrongdoer.

Certain obligations are owed by the Club and it’s members.  Specifically:

1.  Only active club members (who must be 19 years of age or older) are permitted on     Club paddles;
2.  Participants must have completed the waiver;
3.  Participants must not be impaired by alcohol or a drug;
4.  Participants must wear a PFD, and otherwise comply with Coastguard Regulations.

These obligations are not onerous, and are, in fact, only those that the club currently requires of members participating on club trips.

The club has never had a critical incident which resulted in a claim.  That said, it is hoped that this brief description of the club’s new liability insurance policy will reassure members, and hosts in particular, that an appropriate policy of insurance is in place, and will respond should an incident occur.

Ron Everard, on behalf of the Directors of the Nanaimo Paddlers.

LET'S BUILD OUR CLUB TOGETHER!
The executive is looking for YOUR ideas for future events.  We all enjoy our Christmas luncheon and the Newcastle picnic weekend, but these events need fresh ideas from club members, new and old.  We can breathe new life into these events, maybe do things differently,  and want to hear from YOU.  The floor is wide open to consider these and other ways to bring our membership together.  Let's get a discussion going!

Gordon Brown Releases New Book

Come and join Gordon Brown to celebrate the release of his latest book on Wednesday, August 28 (this coming Wednesday) 7pm at Ocean River Sports in Victoria (1630 Store St.).
Your newsletter editor apologizes for this late notice.
Following on from his hugely successful book Sea Kayak, Gordon Brown brings his vast experience and unique style to this latest publication -

Sea Kayak Safety and Rescue

Each chapter begins with a real-life incident which sets the scene and helps to emphasise what follows. The underlying principles are highlighted, practical lessons learnt and the hard skills explored in detail. Numerous colour photos complement and illustrate the text.

This book is essential reading for any sea kayaker, and will be enjoyed and valued by both novice and experienced paddlers alike.
Gordon Brown has recently moved from the Isle of Skye in Scotland to Vancouver Island in Canada. He has a lifetime’s experience of kayaking in all its forms and well over thirty years of coaching sea kayaking. In 1992 he completed both sea kayak and white water kayak BCU Level 5 coach qualifications, and was involved in the development, training and assessment of these awards until they were discontinued when the award scheme was reorganised. In 2016 he completed a Masters Degree in Performance Coaching and has produced a set of three instructional DVDs in the Sea Kayak with Gordon Brown series, the world’s first sea kayak rescue video, Over … and Out, as well as writing the book Sea Kayak also.

Gordon believes that everyone has the potential to achieve more, and that a creative and supportive environment can lay the foundations for the greatest advances in personal development. He values the importance of taking time to reflect and learn from the experience. His most rewarding experiences are when helping someone else achieve their potential. He likes acoustic folk music, close friends and good food although not necessarily in that order.

Gordon has previously said that he has the best job in the world. He still believes that to be true and looks forward to his time on the water with all students.

ONE LAST ITEM:
HI, Catherine here. I forwarded a picture of my mom (Mollie walls, long time paddler) and Trevor in the Nuchatlitz, she’s 88, oldest paddler? Thought you might want it for the newsletter. I’m trying to find a small double to rent for oct 10 to 17 for Hornby.
Is it possible to ask the club if anyone owns one they would like to rent? I’m really not too good on the computer, that’s why I’m asking you. Thanks  and have a great week in the heat.
