Can You Help Lola Find
a Home of Her Own?

We tested Lola and she came back positive for Feline Leukemia (FeLV). As the name implies, it is a viral infection of cats that affects a cat’s immune system and bone marrow. For the Volunteers who found out yesterday it kind of feels like getting the wind knocked out of you. Our plan is to get her vaccinated next week and wait a couple of weeks then get her spayed. At the time of her spay we will retest her again and hope she comes back negative. Until then Lola will be spoiled and loved on. She is a sweet girl. If she comes back positive again for leukemia we will find her a home or find a sanctuary that takes (+) kittens and cats.  Thank you for caring about these little ones and all you do to help.

~ In general, cats with FeLV have weaker immune systems, so they are more prone to infections such as upper respiratory infections, dental disease and mycoplasma haemofelis that can cause anemia. Most cats with FeLV live normal lives, but their life span tends to be significantly shorter. Still, adult cats can live many healthy years with the illness. Sadly, kittens contracting the disease often don’t fare as well. Around 80 percent of kittens with FeLV do not live past three years, and most die within a year.

~FeLV-positive cats can live perfectly happy lives. People who have FeLV-positive cats just need to be aware that those cats may have a shorter life span and that they should be taken to a veterinarian as soon as a problem is noticed. Many people who adopt and care for FeLV-positive cats describe it as a positive, deeply rewarding experience, and that they would gladly do so again.
