CHUMASH

Parshas Re'eh - Sheini with Rashi

Moshe is telling the Yidden about bringing Korbanos and eating regular meat in Eretz Yisroel.

When the Yidden come into Eretz Yisroel, the Mishkan won’t have a place to stay yet. During those years, when Eretz Yisroel is being conquered, you can build a Mizbeiach in any place to bring a korban if you decide to give an animal as a present to Hashem.

But once the Beis Hamikdash is built, that will be the ONLY place to bring a Korban!

Only if a Korban becomes posul and you redeem it with money, you can shecht it somewhere else, because it loses its Kedusha.

All types of presents to Hashem that become holy we can only eat in Yerushalayim, because that is the city in Eretz Yisroel with the MOST kedusha.

When you celebrate in Yerushalayim, don’t forget to take care of the Leviim, and give them the presents Hashem told you to give!

While you were in the Midbar, you were only allowed to eat meat from your animals if you brought them to the Mishkan and gave part of the meat to Hashem as a Korban Shelamim. But this will change when you come into Eretz Yisroel, since you won’t live so close to the Mishkan anymore. You will be able to shecht an animal and eat it without bringing it as a korban. But don’t make a mistake and think that since the blood won’t be sprinkled on the Mizbeiach you are allowed to eat it. Blood is always asur for a Yid to eat!

Remember to keep all of Hashem’s mitzvos, whether they are easy or hard — and Hashem will give you brachos that it will be good for you and for your children after you!

TEHILLIM

119 (first half)

In Tehillim, we are saying the first half of the LONGEST kapitel in the whole Tehillim, Kapitel Kuf-Yud-Tes!

One of the pesukim in today’s Tehillim is “Baruch Ata Hashem Lamdeini Chukecha” — “Blessed are You Hashem, teach me Your mitzvos!”

The Shulchan Aruch tells us that if we start saying a bracha and then realize it’s a mistake, we can say the words “Lamdeini Chukecha” so we say a whole posuk and don’t Chas Veshalom say Hashem’s name for no reason!

TANYA

Igeres Hakodesh Siman Zayin

In today’s Tanya we learn what it means when we say “Ashreinu Mah Tov Chelkeinu!”

We learned that the chayus of Hashem comes into the world through each of the many mitzvos and halachos of the Torah. We also learned that the neshamos of Yidden are split up into as many parts as there are halachos! The chayus of Hashem comes through the Torah to each neshama.

Yesterday we said that Adam Harishon included all of the neshamos. Today we see that Yaakov Avinu fixed up the Cheit Eitz Hadaas of Adam Harishon. So he also became like Adam Harishon, and the neshamos of all of the Yidden afterwards come from Yaakov Avinu! (Yidden are called Bnei Yisrael, the children of Yaakov!)

Just like Yaakov Avinu includes ALL of the neshamos, he also includes the whole Torah in his neshama!

Each of our own neshamos are a little piece (a chelek) of the neshama of Yaakov Avinu, and there is a little chelek of Torah that gives chayus to our neshama.

When can we feel OUR chayus of Hashem through our chelek of Torah?

During davening!

That’s what it means when we say “Ashreinu, Mah Tov Chelkeinu!” “We are so fortunate, our chelek is so good!” We are talking about our chelek of Torah and mitzvos which connects us to Hashem, that we can feel during davening!

IY”H tomorrow we will learn about the next part, “Umah No’im Goraleinu.”

HAYOM YOM

Chof-Hey Menachem Av

The Rebbe Rashab taught that we say “L’Torah, Le’Chuppah, U’leMaasim Tovim” also for a girl. Today we learn why!

By the bris of a baby boy, we say “Kesheim Shenichnas LaBris, Kein Yikanes LeTorah, LeChuppah, U’leMaasim Tovim” — “just like he was brought into the bris, he should also grow to Torah, to the Chuppah, and to do mitzvos!”

Really, Torah is also part of Maasim Tovimmitzvos. Because it’s impossible to do these mitzvos unless we learned Torah to know how to do them and to WANT to do them!

When we say “Torah” here, we are talking about the mitzvah of Talmud Torah — to use every possible moment to learn Torah. This is one of the mitzvos that girls and women don’t have to keep, because it would make it harder for them to do their main shlichus as a Jewish woman!

So you would think that for a girl, you should only say the second half of the bracha, “LeChuppah UleMaasim Tovim,” since they are not mechuyav in the mitzvah of Talmud Torah.

But the Rebbeim did say “LeTorah, LeChuppah, U’leMaasim Tovim” for a girl too! Why? Because the Chachomim teach us that a girl has a part in the mitzvah of Talmud Torah. She makes sure that her husband and her children are doing the mitzvah properly, by sending her husband to go learn Torah and making sure her children learn Torah too!

Then, not only is she doing her shlichus of being the Akeres Habayis, she also takes a part in the mitzvah of Talmud Torah! Because she makes it happen, she also gets a part of the reward for this special mitzvah!

That’s why it is our minhag that when a baby girl is born, we also say L’Torah, L’Chuppah, U’lemaasim Tovim, that she should have the zechus of ALL of these things!

SEFER HAMITZVOS

Shiur #21 - Mitzvas Asei #10, #5

Today we learn two mitzvos. We learn one mitzvah from the last perakim of Hilchos Kriyas Shema, and one from the new set of halachos we are starting today, Hilchos Tefillah.

1) (Mitzvas Asei #10) Shema: We need to say Shema every day, in the morning and at night. The posuk we learn this mitzvah from is one of the 12 pesukim, Veshinantam! Because this is a mitzvah that has a specific time, women don’t have to keep it.

We learn this mitzvah from a posuk in Parshas Vaeschanan: וְדִבַּרְתָּ בָּם בְּשִׁבְתְּךָ בְּבֵיתֶךָ

The details are explained in Mesechta Brachos.

2) (Mitzvas Asei #5) Tefillah: We need to daven to Hashem. In the Torah, this is called Avodah.

We learn this mitzvah from a posuk in Parshas Mishpatim: וַעֲבַדְתֶּם אֵת ה׳ אֱלֹקֵיכֶם

RAMBAM

Hilchos Kriyas Shema - Tefillah

In Perek Gimmel, we learn many halachos about where we are allowed to say Shema. A person can’t say Shema in a smelly place or in a bathroom.

Perek Daled: Some people don’t have the mitzvah to say Kriyas Shema every day. For example, women have a different kind of Avodas Hashem, so they don’t have to do certain mitzvos that have a specific time, like saying Kriyas Shema.

Now we finish this set of halachos, and start learning Hilchos Tefillah!

Perek Alef: The Rambam tells us about how davening used to be — people used to daven in their own words. From the time of Moshe Rabbenu until Ezra Hasofer, there was no nusach for davening — everyone davened in Lashon Kodesh the way they felt and when they needed something.

When Yidden didn’t know how to speak in Lashon Kodesh very well anymore, they couldn’t express themselves properly in davening. So the Anshei Knesses Hagedolah made Shemoneh Esrei for everyone to say.

The first three brachos say how special Hashem is, and the last three brachos say “thank You” to Hashem. In the middle there are many brachos that ask Hashem for things that Yidden need.

The Chachomim also made set times for davening the different tefillos each day, that match up to the times when korbanos were brought.

RAMBAM PEREK ECHOD

Hilchos Keilim - Perek Yud-Daled

Perek Yud-Daled explains how something can keep tumah from being passed on. If you fill a pot with food and then seal it closed, and put it into a tomei oven, the pot and the food stays tahor. But if you put something that GIVES tumah inside of a pot and seal it closed, it can make the whole oven tomei.

INYANA D'YOMA

Kibbud Av Va'em

Our Mommies and Tatties are so special!

The Torah says that there are three partners in making a Yid: A father, a mother, and Hashem. Isn’t that amazing? Our parents are partners with Hashem!

Also, Mommy and Tatty take such good care of us — would we have food, or clothes, or a house, or toys without them?

That’s one of the reasons why Hashem gave us this mitzvah of Kibbud Av Va’em, since we are giving Kavod to Hashem when we give them kavod — they are Hashem’s partners! It is also our way of saying thank you to them for all they do.

Sometimes this can be a hard mitzvah to do right.

One time, there was a boy who was having a hard time doing this mitzvah, and he asked the Rebbe what to do. The Rebbe answered that he should write down the posukKabed Es Ovicha V’Es Imecha” (honor your father and mother), and for the next few weeks read it from the paper every day. This will help to remember to do the mitzvah right!

TEFILLAH

Aizehu Mekoman

After the section of the korbanos, the Chachomim taught that we should say two parts of Torah. First we say the Mishna of “Aizehu Mekoman,” which is the fifth perek of Mishnayos Zevachim. Then we say the beginning of the Medrash on Chumash Vayikra, called Toras Kohanim. This is the paragraph that starts “Rabi Yishmael,” explaining the 13 ways we learn things from Torah.

The Chachomim added these sections to make sure that every day, everyone has the opportunity to learn at least one piece of Mikra, Mishna, and Talmud!

- Mikra (the Chumash) we already did before, with the Korban Tomid.

- Mishna is this part, Aizehu Mekoman.

- Talmud is the Medrash of Rabi Yishmael, which is also a part of Talmud.

This Mishna was chosen because it speaks about korbanos, and because it is very unusual! Most Mishnas have a lot of Machlokes, that there are many opinions from all of the different Tannaim. But this part of Torah Shebaal Peh was clear to everyone, exactly as it was taught by Moshe Rabbeinu on Har Sinai, without any machlokes!

HALACHOS HATZRICHOS

Aizehu Mekoman

It is important to understand the words of davening. But even if we don’t, we are davening to Hashem, and Hashem understands what we are saying!

The section of Aizehu Mekoman is different. The reason we say these paragraphs is in order that we LEARN something from every part of Torah. When we learn Torah Shebaal Peh, we only do the mitzvah when we understand what we are learning!

So it is even more important to understand these paragraphs, so that we really do learn this part of Torah!

GEULAH U'MOSHIACH

Everyone Will Have Nevuah!

The next sefer of Trei Asar is Yoel.

There are two main inyonim in the sefer of Yoel: That there will be a plague of locusts if the Yidden don’t do teshuvah, and a nevuah about Moshiach.

One of the things the Navi Yoel says about the times of the Geulah is that all of the Yidden will be Neviim! Hashem tells the Navi:

וְהָיָה אַחֲרֵי כֵן אֶשְׁפּוֹךְ אֶת רוּחִי עַל כָּל בָּשָׂר וְנִבְּאוּ בְּנֵיכֶם וּבְנֹתֵיכֶם זִקְנֵיכֶם חֲלֹמוֹת יַחֲלֹמוּן בַּחוּרֵיכֶם חֶזְיֹנוֹת יִרְאוּ

Vehaya Acharei Chein — This will happen afterwards, in the time of the Geulah

Eshpoch Es Ruchi Al Kol Basar — I will pour My chochmah and understanding of Hashem onto every person.

Venib’u Bneichem Uvnoseichem — Your sons and daughters will say nevuos,

Zikneichem Chalomos Yachalomun — Your old people will dream nevuos,

Bachureichem Chezyonos Yir’u — Your young men will see visions of nevuos!
