Travel Spotlight: Palio di Siena, Italy

This week, <<First Name>>, we're going to Italy! More specifically, the Palio di Siena!

Oh, have you not heard of it? Let's fix that! The Palio di Siena is a horse race held twice a year, on July 2nd and August 16th, in Siena, Italy. Ten horses and riders, dressed in the appropriate colors, represent ten of the seventeen "contrade," or city wards.

The Palio held on July 2nd is named the "Palio di Provenzano," in honor of the Madonna of Provenzano, a Marian devotion particular to Siena which developed around an icon from the Terzo Camollia. The Palio held on August 16th is named "Palio dell'Assunta," in honor of the Assumption of Mary.

Watch this 4-minute video from Rick Steves. He sums it up perfectly.
(Just ignore the 1-minute sales pitch at the end. Well, unless you want to buy his guidebooks, which I highly recommend!)
"The Tuscan hill town of Siena is known both for its pride and for its independent attitude. And for five centuries, that spirit has shown itself in a crazy horse race - the Palio! Twice every summer, the entire community of Siena hurls itself into the traditional revelry of the event with abandon. In this clip from his new, one-hour Rick Steves' European Festivals public television special, Rick gets right into the thick of it all."
Festivals like the Palio are a big reason why I love travel so much. I love to see how we all celebrate life. The differences. The similarities. The grandeur. The nuances. It's all so exciting to me! I ignore the divisive politics, the religious bickering, and philosophical pedagoguery as best I can and enjoy the people and culture to their fullest!

Can you imagine just how thrilling it would be to stand in that center circle with the Italians and get swept away by their passion? I can! But, why imagine it? Go! Travel to Italy! Immerse yourself in the authentic, historical experience of the Palio di Siena.

Does that sound like an Extraordinary Adventure to you, as it does to me? Does it sound thrilling!? Do you want to travel a little further, get up close and touch the world, and adventure beyond the typical vacation experience to become fully immersed? I hope you do! Because I would love to begin planning your trip to Italy today!

This Week's Update

Hey <<First Name>>! I hope all is well by you this week!

I've been thinking. If a company is going to call itself "extraordinary," I think everything that company does should be extraordinary - including its weekly emails. I've always strived to do that, but I was failing you. As of today, these evolve into something that I believe will serve you better.

Please allow me to share what changes I've made to my weekly emails. Personally, I felt they were too cumbersome. I felt that because they were so long, so involved, so flashy, and so packed with content, it was overwhelming to my readers.

With that in mind, I've made the following changes...
  • I switched to a plain-text email format, almost entirely.
  • I've broken down the four sections of the email into four separate emails.
    • Travel Deals
    • Travel Tips
    • Travel Spotlights, and
    • EA Radio Episodes (my podcast)
  • I have made it possible for a new subscriber to choose which of the four they want to receive - including receiving all four.
    • So, too, can you now tell me which list you'd prefer to stay on and which list you'd prefer to be removed from.
      • Simply reply to this email and I'll make the changes for you.
  • I have made it possible for a current subscriber to "Update Their Preferences" (see the bottom of any email) so they, too, can choose which of the four they want to receive - including receiving all four - without needing my assistance.
  • I will be sending each email on a different day of the week.
    • Each day, you will get one concise email that gets straight to the point.
(This letter is a one-week-only deal. Next week, I'll get right to the subject. I'll include this letter for each of the four emails this week, however. I want to make sure that it gets read.)
