August Birder of the Month: Rene Valdes

For Rene, birding began with a pair of borrowed binoculars and a challenge to find "Woody Woodpecker" on a nature trail in his hometown of Mazatlán, Mexico. Nearly two decades later, Rene lives and breathes birding. He's a field ornithologist specializing in conservation, birding tour guide, wildlife photographer, and eBird reviewer for three states in Mexico. He's also a member of the BirdsEye apps team, where he coordinates citizen science projects, reviews photos, and helps manage content on our servers.

And he's seen a few birds along the way - 969 of Mexico's 1,100 species to be exact. Before he turns 40, Rene aims to bring that number up to 1,000! Read on to learn more about birding and wildlife conservation in Mexico, and see some of Rene's best bird photos.
